Winning Design Chosen for U.S.S. Intrepid

After a nail-biting competition among six teams of finalists that designed an energy-efficient hangar for the U.S.S. Intrepid, judges chose a winner on Dec. 7, Pearl Harbor Day.Team Alphabet Soup, made up of 11 NYIT students, walked away with $3,000 and the honor of creating the permanent hangar on the historic warship.

The design, selected by representatives from NYIT and the Intrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum, incorporates five descending tiers that represent the five kamikaze attacks the aircraft carrier sustained during World War II. The sustainable design includes steel and glass structures featuring renewable energy through wind turbines and solar panels. It also includes working and viewing space for aircraft restoration and a multipurpose interior space.

The NYIT team will begin work with museum staff and consultants in the spring on detailed construction plans. Second- and third-place teams Alpha and Mu Xi won $2,400 and $1,500 in prizes, respectively. The design competition, a collaboration between the Schools of Architecture and Design and Engineering and Computing Sciences, offered students an opportunity to engage in an interdisciplinary, real-world experience.
