Convocation Roundup

NYIT kicked off the 2010-2011 academic year on Sept. 2 as faculty and staff members gathered for convocation at the NYIT Auditorium on Broadway or via live stream at other campus locations. The ceremony included the president's state-of-the-institution address, presentation of the inaugural Presidential Technology Awards, and introductions of new members of the NYIT community.


One Global University, One Community

Convocation 2010President Guiliano's address, "Promises Kept," highlighted the ways in which NYIT has kept its promise to deliver quality 21st-century global education -- through technology investments, implementation of the new core curriculum, and transnational expansion. His presentation included a video featuring NYIT school, college, and campus deans speaking about the multifaceted opportunities afforded to our students. Read the president's complete address.

Cyber Security Conference
 Wednesday, Sept. 15

Cyber Security ConferenceNYIT's School of Engineering and Computing Sciences will host a cyber security conference at the NYIT Auditorium on Broadway to bring together government officials and experts to discuss computer vulnerabilities as well as new developments in the protection of individuals and organizations against cyber attacks.
Expert Presenters Include:

Dr. Eric Cole (M.S. '94), author of Hackers Beware, Hiding in Plain Sight and Network Security Bible. A renowned thought leader, Eric has more than 15 years of experience in network security consulting, and his clients include leading international banks, Fortune 500 companies, and the CIA.

Bill Cheswick, co-author of Firewalls and Internet Security: Repelling the Wily Hacker. An expert in system software, security, communications, and visualization, Bill's work on internet mapping was the core technology leading to the Bell Labs spin-off, Lumeta Corporation.

NYIT Students Redesign, Recycle, Reuse ...

VIP_KitchenThanks to a team of NYIT occupational therapy and interior design students, the Vocational Independence Program (VIP) has a new environmentally friendly kitchen. The team -- appropriately named R4 (Recycle, Reduce, Reuse, and Renew) -- competed against peers as part of VIP's Kitchen Redesign Contest and won a $5,000 scholarship. Their winning sustainable kitchen design, which incorporates technology to enable individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities to learn to live independently, features ergonomic spaces, a teacher work station, wheelchair accessible countertops and appliances, and a stovetop to heat ferrous pots.
