What Insurance I take?
I have always found that this question constantly worries many small business and contractors. Obviously its very important to protect your business and therefore we have covered this topic in detail. In November 2010, we sent you an email about the insurance policies your business should have in place. These include Professional Indemnity Insurance, and, if you employ people, Employer's Liability Insurance. We encourage all our clients to take out Tax Investigation Insurance, and if you're an IR35 contractor , you should consider taking out IR35 Tax Liability cover. Read more |
Do not miss allowance of £150 per employee on this Xmas
If a director or an employee incurs expenses for business entertainment or buys a gift in connection with his or her trade, business or profession, these expenses are not allowable under the employee's or director's personal self-assessment tax return or as a business expense. However, an annual allowance of £150 per employee is allowable as a business expense, which includes functions such as Christmas parties so do not miss this allowance to have a free dinner or party on company. |
Unannounced Visit by HMRC
In October 2010, we sent a bulletin about HMRC unannounced visits. We wanted to reassure you that unannounced visits come about mainly as the result of two things: ignoring letters from HMRC and missing or making yourself unavailable for an appointment. Remember two points: first, never, ever ignore correspondence from HMRC and, secondly, this: if you use the DNS online accounting portal , then your affairs will always be up to date and DNS can, quite simply, supply them the information they need when they need it. End of story. So be rest assured and never worry about unannounced visits from HMRC. You can read more on |
Employer Supported Childcare
From 6th April 2011, new rules apply for employer-supported childcare schemes unless you already belong to one. The changes have been made in order to even out the discrepancy between what a high-earner and a low-earner receives in tax relief, thus the amount an employee will be eligible to receive will now depend on a "basic earnings assessment", made by the employer at the beginning of the tax year. If the assessment shows that the employee is likely to be paying higher rate tax, the weekly limits will be £28 and £22 respectively. The limit for basic rate taxpayers remains at the £55 per week. | .
Director Loan Account
This is something HMRC are trying to look in more detail and many directors need to be aware of how they are treated for tax purposes. We have noticed many small business are not careful when taking money out of the company and at the end of the year result is overdrawn director loan account. Please remember that as per law any overdrawn account on the date of year end of accounts and not settled within 9 months results in tax liability on company under sec 419 of ICTA 1988. To continue reading please read article on director loan account. |

Before I go, it's sad that England lost both bids to host the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cup, but congratulations to Russia and Qatar respectively all the same. Being too hot is probably the last thing on you mind at the moment, but here's a joke:
Q: How do you keep cool at a football match? A: Stand next to a Fan!
Please accept my grand wishes for this Xmas and I wish you all the best.
Sincerely,
|
