Making the most of your membership! #1 of my 7 favorite ways to network successfully in any environment...stay tuned for the other 6!
As an educator and marketer for almost 15 years I have had the opportunity to "network" in many different situations. I have done a lot of reading on the subject and have narrowed my method of networking to seven basic "rules." I will plan to share one per newsletter for the next few months.
My first two weeks in Blacksburg, a dear friend invited me to "Up on the Roof" where I literally knew no one. I acted as a wallflower for 10 minutes or so and then looked for my "in" to one of the many conversations going on around me. Most people who know me, know that I have a passion for shoes. My "in" that particular day was by complimenting a well-connected realtor, Manning Blanchard, on his trendy athletic shoes. Little did I know how my compliment would lead to introductions to more than 15 NRV "movers and shakers." Manning was more than happy to share why he loved his trendy athletic shoes and because I took the time to listen, we were able to establish a good relationship and he was able to in turn help me get connected to the NRV community. I would see Manning about once a month after that day and over time was able to share with him the work I was doing with the Creekmore Law Firm.
I received several referrals from Manning during my time with the firm and love to use this example of how relationship building and truly listening to the needs of others will also provide referrals for your business. I look forward to partnering with each of you to make your businesses more visible and successful this year through the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce. We know how hard it can be to network in a room of hundreds of people so please remember we have a team of Chamber Ambassadors who can help introduce you around at Business After Hours & Eggs and Issues events. I look forward to seeing you Monday at Business After Hours at Blacksburg Country Club!
Warmest regards,
Allison Davis, Chamber Member Services Director

Mainstream Music - Offering music lessons since 1988
Gary endorses the National Educational Music Company's thoughts on why your child should play a musical instrument? "Students with coursework/experience in music performance and music appreciation scored higher on the SAT. The musician is constantly adjusting decisions on tempo, tone, style, rhythm, phrasing, and feeling- training the brain to become incredibly good at organizing and conducting numerous activities at once. Dedicated practice of this orchestration can have a great payoff for lifelong attentional skills, intelligence, and ability for self-knowledge and expression."
Join Mainstream Music & the Montgomery Chamber of Commerce for an upcoming Ribbon Cutting on May 23 at noon at 2401 S. Main Street, Unit L in Blacksburg (phone: 520-552-7448) to learn more about music lessons and instrument rental opportunities...be sure to ask Gary about his Jazz group, FMJP and book them for your next event! Please RSVP for Mainstream's Ribbon Cutting with Allison at adavis@montgomerycc.org.

The Leadership New River Valley Sparkplug Award
Leadership New River Valley sponsored by the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce awarded the first "Sparkplug" Award for 2012. The recipients for the March award were Lauren Collins of the Marriot Courtyard, Shannon Hammonds of Warm Hearth, and Julie Rosenberger of the Virginia Tech Foundation. These three leadership participants have led the class toward the selection of their service project by learning as much as possible from the three agencies, reporting back to the class of 2012, and keeping the class focused on the appropriate path.
The criteria for the award were clear communication, high levels of energy, and their ability to work together and share with the full class.
Kevin Shaw was the first recipient of the Sparkplug Award from the LNRV Class of 2011. Kevin demonstrated full-on high energy throughout the 2011 LNRV Session.
Congratulations Lauren, Shannon & Julie!
But Wait... Leadership Doesn't Stop At Graduation! The Building Community Committee/Team for the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce heard the voices of the alumni of the Leadership New River Valley. Under the direction of chairperson, Terri Mitchell, the graduates of LNRV were contacted to determine their interest in forming an alumni association. Over sixty percent of those graduates responding expressed an interest in forming such an association.
An event was planned for May 3, at the Holiday Inn on Prices Fork Road in Blacksburg, to reunite members of the five graduating classes ('05, '06, '07, '08, and '11). Unfortunately, the weather kept many of those indicating they would attend away. Sarah Miller ('11) walked away with the Door Prize.
Catherine Sutton, Executive Director of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, pledged the support of the Chamber of Commerce toward this association. She shared her experiences with leadership programs around the country. She also commented the level of energy she has seen and experienced with graduates of LNRV is like no other. Terri Mitchell ('05), Chair of the Building Community Committee/Team, also shared her experiences and the support of the committee to move forward with the intent to provide advanced leadership education/development, social opportunities, and community service to build the program in accordance to the wants and needs of the alumni
Seventy percent of the LNRV graduates have indicated they want to give back to the community. They attributed their knowledge of the bright spots and the areas in need in our community to what they have learned through Leadership NRV.
Information has been presented to the alumni and will continue to go out in reference to an opportunity for a community service project. Feeding Southwest Virginia is a food drive challenge which has been proposed as a competition for Chambers of Commerce throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia by our Governor. Food pantries are in need of food and Chambers of Commerce are being asked to secure food to help. We have the connections with our Leadership New River Valley graduates to take on this challenge. Leadership NRV ROCK ON, Lets Feed Southwest Virginia!

The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce and Senator Mark Warner's Leadership Summit: A Leadership Connection
Senator Mark Warner has contacted the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce to assist with the design and development of a Commonwealth Leadership Summit to be held at the University of Richmond on June 15 and 16. This program is open to graduates of Leadership New River Valley and its Alumni Association.
Senator Warner has become very conscious of the divide in our Commonwealth and its leaders. His goal is to create more communication between and among the leaders in our communities and regions within our great Commonwealth. Each community based leadership program has been encouraged to identify and invite leaders to attend the program.
Catherine Sutton, Executive Director, has worked to provide information to the Senator's office and Sharon Scott, has worked with the Senator's contacts to help design the curriculum, identify speakers, and assist with the logistics necessary for the program's success.
If you are a graduate of Leadership New River Valley and are interested in attending the program to represent our area, please contact Sharon Scott at the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce. The cost of the program is FREE; you pay only your travel, meals, and lodging.
For more information, you can access the site at http://www.warner.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?p=leadership-summit-2012

PRESS RELEASE
Hello,
I am pleased to share great news with you: on February 24, 2012 Customer Driven Technology was acquired by Barry-Wehmiller Companies. Because our relationship with you is so important, I want to let you know about this wonderful opportunity before your hear information--true or untrue--from another source. Please see the attached letter of support from Bob Thibeault, Sr. Vice President of World Wide Channel, PTC in support of my merger.
Barry-Wehmiller is a St. Louis, MO-based $1.5 billion global engineering consulting and manufacturing technology solutions company. The company has more than 6000 associates worldwide-1000 of whom are consultants-at its 66 locations around the globe. We at CDT in Overland Park, Kansas are thrilled to be Barry-Wehmiller's 66th location.
What does this change mean to our customers? Rest assured that our relationship with you will not change. You will continue to talk to the same people. You will continue to experience the same great, personalized service that is the hallmark of the CDT business model. But, in addition to continued great service and product expertise, we now have capabilities we only dreamed about before. By combining our resources with Barry-Wehmiller's, CDT becomes a one-stop solution for multiple ERP platforms, Global PLM & Engineering Services, and the PTC solutions that gave us our start. With Barry-Wehmiller's consulting divisions as part of our business, we now have access to more than 1000 consultants to help us provide world-class enterprise solutions. We now have a contract with PTC to sell their products anywhere in the United States and plan to expand to Europe and Asia. As a result of the merger, we are now the largest company in the PTC reseller channel.
If you are a current customer, you can expect to receive better support from the same people with whom you have always worked. If you are not a CDT customer but see the exciting opportunities this new arrangement presents, please reach out to me at the information below.
