Greetings! We can't decide if it's winter or spring but either way - what's not to love anytime in southwest Virginia!
The last couple of weeks have been very busy. The Holiday Inn University held an exceptional Business After Hours in their newly renovated ballroom. Many thanks to Ken Rogers and his staff as well as his co-sponsor Adventure World! They gave away some amazing door prizes this month too. Next month our Business After Hours is the YMCA, along with Frank Spicer & Cox, Attorneys, Colley Architects, and Custom Catering. Hope to see you there on March 15th!
Our 2012 Leadership NRV class held their orientation today --- can you believe 26 participants! Wow! I attended the morning session and this group is fantastic. A wonderfully diverse group with lots of energy and enthusiasm. Dr. Sharon Scott is facilitating and of course, her energy is contagious.
Our March 1st Eggs and Issues will be held at the Holiday Inn Christiansburg. We received so many positive remarks on this change to a larger location and we hope to see you there. Breakfast starts at 7:30 am and program begins at 8:00 am. March's speaker is Michael St. Jean, Executive Director of the VT Airport who will be addressing the economic impact of the airport expansion.
We are working on 2 new programs/events, which I am very excited about and will be sharing information soon. We have an amazing business community and we want to continually improve and offer you the best value possible for your membership.

Greetings!
As I explain the benefits of being a member of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce to both current and potential members, four words that are always a part of my presentation are "your business' marketing plan." How can the events of the Chamber of Commerce become a part of your business' marketing plan? Should you consider your participation in these events as part of your marketing budget? I think the answer is an obvious "yes!"
Our events are designed to give you and your business maximum exposure in the business community! Your presence at these events is critical. And beyond that, you can increase your presence at the events by becoming a sponsor of an event.
We have two tremendous opportunities coming up quickly and it's not too late to become a sponsor or participant of either of these events. Mark your calendars for May 14th-the MCCC Golf Tournament which is followed by the Business after Hours at the Blacksburg Country Club. We also have the Job Fair and Business Expo scheduled for July 19th at The Inn at Virginia Tech-also followed by the Business after Hours.
I hope to speak with you about both of these events! It's fun to be a participant and we hope that you will be there!
Nancy

Leadership 2012 Moving Forward
The Leadership New River Valley Class of 2012 was launched on February 22 with twenty-six participants. This year's class is comprised of residents of Montgomery County and or those who are employed in Montgomery County. Interviews were conducted this year to ensure the success of the individual participants and a full disclosure of the time commitment and expectations.
The addition of an orientation day makes the program slightly different from last year's program. This year's class will study leadership in the context of change management with an emphasis on finding solutions and implementing change effectively. Feedback from the Class of 2012 has led to the design of the program to resemble a graduate class with a laboratory or class project.
The program will continue to focus on elements affecting the quality of life in Montgomery County but will closely examine the application of leadership skills and change management principles used by leaders. Individual members of the class will identify job related skills for the purpose of improvement. These skills will be enhanced throughout the year with an individual ROI calculated at year end. This addition will increase the value to employers electing to send their emerging leaders through Montgomery County's Leadership New River Valley.
Watch for more news on the Class of 2012 in upcoming newletters and social media sites.

Wanna Be a Food Network Star?
Rock Shrimp Productions (Bobby Flay's Production Company) is working on a new series and looking to cast people who are in the process of opening up a restaurant, bakery, sandwich shop or any similar type of food business (must be a storefront with walk in customers). I'm reaching out to SBDC's, Chamber of Commerce, andbusinesses who might know of new startups opening up. Below are the requirements.
A new Food Network series is looking for FOOD ENTREPRENEURS. Specifically, people who have left their previous career to start a new restaurant (or similar business). Those chosen will receive culinary & business coaching from Bobby Flay (a chef, restaurateur, and fixture on the Food Network) as well as invaluable national publicity.
- Must have little-to-no prior professional culinary experience.
- Must be planning to open a brick-and-mortar space where there will be walk-in customers (restaurant, bakery, sandwich shop, etc.). CAN NOT BE OPEN ALREADY.
- Must be aiming to open this year.
Those interested that fit the guidelines, please email the following: Outline your timeline, budget, menu, team, and especially what's at stake for you in this endeavor (why you are doing it and what risks, financial as well as personal, you are taking). We are highly interested in the "human-interest" angle of your story. There is no deadline.

Dear Chamber of Commerce Members,
I am the coordinator of the Job Shadowing Program at Virginia Tech's Career Services. If you are not already aware of this program, I would like to take a moment to introduce you to it. Job shadowing is a volunteer opportunity for students to spend one to five days observing and working with professionals, and experiencing a typical week on the job. This program is designed to assist students in researching possible career options and learning how their academic major can be applied out in the real world. We at Career Services provide a database of companies for students to assist them in locating employers that will provide them with a beneficial job shadowing experience. At this time, we are currently looking for more sponsors to participate in the program, and who better than Blacksburg and the surrounding community!
Job shadowing experiences can be held during an academic semester, in the summer, or during university breaks. You can choose the length of your job shadowing experience, whether it is a single day, an entire week, or any amount of days in-between. Please remember that this is a job shadowing experience that allows students to explore a career field and experience a normal work week. Some possible activities for students include a tour of your facilities, attending meetings, performing general office tasks, meeting with other employees in the company to learn more about their job functions and assisting on projects.
Other than your time, there are absolutely no cost to participate in this program for you as the sponsor. Students are responsible for all of their expenses including transportation, lodging, and meals. I would encourage you to visit the Job Shadowing section of our website where you will find additional information on our program: http://www.career.vt.edu/Externship/welcome.html.If you are ready to sponsor a Virginia Tech job shadowing experience, please place your information on Hokies-4-Hire if you already have an account, and if you do not already have an account please contact me at ksteuer@vt.edu and I will forward directions on how to create an account.
I hope that you will consider becoming a Virginia Tech Job Shadow Sponsor and in doing so, give back to the Virginia Tech and Blacksburg community. I look forward to having the opportunity to work with you this year. If you have any questions or would like to receive an information packet with additional information, please call me at (540) 231-8081 or email me at ksteuer@vt.edu.
Sincerely,
Katie Steuer
