Greetings! It's always a good day to be in Southwest Virginia! Governor McDonnell is coming to our area this afternoon to meet with local businesses and discuss business and employment issues. We are so pleased to have seven of our Chamber members participate in a Roundtable with the Governor: Scott Hill, CEO, LewisGale Montgomery Hospital and the Chamber's Chairman of the Board; Eric Johnsen, State Farm; John Phillips, President, Premier Transfer & Storage, Joe Meredith, President, Corporate Research Center, Joel Williams, Chairman, JSW Financial; Ray Tuck, President, Tuck Chiropractic; Alex Greengold, Regional Director, DISH Network. Many thanks to all of our members for your responses your willingness to participate in this event.
Join me in welcoming Nancy Creed as the Membership Director for the Chamber. Nancy is a very welcome addition to our staff, as you will see from her bio. She is a very well respected and experienced sales and marketing professional. Nancy, Diana and I are focused on member value and services, programs, and building a strong business community.
We are so pleased to have Sarah Miller and the newly re-named Lumos Network (nTelos) sponsor our September Business After Hours next Thursday at Bull & Bones at the Pete Dye River Course. Dr. Joe Meredith, President of the CRC, is our speaker for Eggs & Issues on October 6th. Phase II of the CRC is under construction and Dr. Meredith will talk about the Research Park and future plans. We are very proud that the CRC was named the 2010 Outstanding Research/Science Park!
Mark your calendar for Friday, December 9th for our Annual Dinner & Awards, VCOM II. More details to follow.
We'll also be sending out invitations to come to a Microsoft Seminar in October. Door prize drawings will include Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2010. Seminars will be limited to 10 people. Look for more details in our next newsletter.

The Montgomery Chamber of Commerce would like
to announce the appointment of
Nancy L. Creed as its new Membership Director.
Ms. Creed joins MCCC with more than 20 years of sales experience which includes over 15 years in direct sales experience with Mary Kay Inc., and six years in the local hotel industry. Nancy particularly enjoys business to business sales and relationships.
Nancy holds a Masters of Arts Degree from Bowling Green State University, Ohio with a special emphasis in Interpersonal and Public Communication. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Speech/Communication from the University of Pittsburgh.
Nancy is a current member of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce and a graduate of the Chamber's Leadership NRV program. Ms. Creed is a member of the American Business Women's Association where she served multiple terms as President of the Organization. She was named Chapter Business Woman of the Year for 2010. She is also a member of Business Network International and serves as the 2011-2012 President of the Founder's Chapter in Blacksburg.
Nancy is married to David Creed and has two daughters, Kate McQuail of Boulder, CO and Sarah McQuail of Blacksburg. She has two step children, Aaron Creed of Radford and Megan Creed Hash, also of Radford. |

MCPS Education Beat |
Thank You! Thanks to the Dough Raising Campaign sponsored by the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce and Domino's pizza, every student in MCPS received a Commitment to Graduate bracelet at the start of the school year. These neon green accessories provide a steady reminder to students to continue to strive toward high school graduation.
MCPS Launches New Identity
MCPS recently unveiled a new identity and website for the school division. The new logo is incorporated on the website at www.mcps.org.
The new identity, or logo, features dynamic figures engaged in various activities, the most notable being a student celebrating graduation. The logo is representative of the division slogan recently adopted by the school board - "Preparing Students For: Their Lives, The Community, The World."
The website places student achievement at the forefront with rotating student photos on the home page. The new site is also a transition to a content management system that allows for improved work flow and administration of the website.
Groundbreaking Dates for AHS and BHS
- Auburn High School Groundbreaking Ceremony, September 19, 3:30 p.m. (Parking will be between the fire station and the AHS vocational building)
- The Blacksburg High School groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, October 11 at 3:30 p.m. Parking will be at the BHS location on 3109 Price's Fork Road.

5th Annual Scrabble Tournament
Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley
Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the German Club in Blacksburg
Adult illiteracy rates are as high as 14 percent in some New River Valley localities. Literacy Volunteers of the New River Valley, a non-profit organization providing one-on-one tutoring for adult learners, is devoted to lower that percentage. The annual Scrabble tournament, a primary fundraiser for Literacy Volunteers, is how you can help spell L-I-T-E-R-A-C-Y for your NRV friends and neighbors.
