What a wonderful place to live and work! I have been fortunate to live elsewhere but MontgomeryCounty is by far my very favorite and I believe it is the most beautiful in natural resources as well as people.
With that said, yesterday I participated in the New River Valley Planning District Commission Kick-Off Summit for the New River Valley Livability Initiative. Sara Bohn, JSW Financial and Board member, as well as Dr. Sharon Scott, Facilitator for the
Leadership New River Valley program are attending with me. Here are a few of the questions we discussed. How can we support existing communities? How can we enhance our region's economic competitiveness? How can we enhance the safeguard the things we value most about our region? We will report on the next stages of this planning group. If you would like to get involved, call me, as there will be opportunities for service on one of the nine working groups. More information is available at www.nrvlivability.org.
The Town of Christiansburg is doing outreach for their Comprehensive Plan and will be holding two general meetings that you are invited to attend. More details will be coming but the first meeting is Thursday evening August 25th and second meeting is early afternoon on Saturday, August 27th. Information will be available on the Town of Christiansburg's website and we will post it on Facebook as well.
We submitted two names to serve on the Town of Blacksburg's Business Climate Task Force. Their first meeting is scheduled for August 19th and we will follow up with news about their progress.
The Alexander Black House Gala is Saturday, August 27th. The Blacksburg Partnership and Town of Blacksburg have done an outstanding job of putting together a lovely evening at the Inn at Virginia Tech with wonderful auction items. Corporate tables are available and more details are available on www.blacksburghistory.org.
The Business Expo has received many, many compliments from participants and attendees! The Inn did a fantastic job with hosting the Business After Hours as well and we continue to receive compliments. Our sincere thanks to General Manager, Tom Shaver, Teresa Hughes, and Bob Muse - well done! We have already started planning for 2012 and hope you will join us.
September's Eggs & Issues, Business Breakfast Forum will host candidates for three (3) county-wide races - Sheriff, Treasurer, and Commissioner of Revenue, facilitated by Dr. Bob Denton. Join us for the discussion at 7:30 am, Lucie Monroe's, September 1st. Call the Chamber offices at 552.2636 for reservations.

Joel Williams contributes to new book focusing on helping business owners develop transition strategies
Proceeds to benefit Community Foundation of NRV
BLACKSBURG, Va. (August 9, 2011) - Joel S. Williams, chairman of JSW Financial, is a contributing author to a new book that helps business owners develop strategies to transition their companies.
"Getting in Business is a Funny Thing - Getting Out is Not: A Business Owner's Guide to Growing and Transitioning the Business" helps business owners stay focused on the future. "Small businesses make up half of all private sector jobs and yet they face several challenges," Williams says. "Many of the successful enterprises of today were founded by members of the Baby Boom generation. These entrepreneurs are finding it at least as hard to get out of the business as it was to get it started. The majority of business owners haven't planned sufficiently for their exit. They have no real strategy or succession plan. This book is intended to provide ideas, both for maximizing the value of the business during its operation, and for making a successful transition to new owners."
Complimentary copies of the book, published by Collaborative Press, are available by making contributions to the Community Foundation of the New River Valley, an organization Williams helped to establish. Checks can be made payable to: Community Foundation of the NRV, P.O. Box 6009, Christiansburg, VA 24068.
Proceeds from the sale of the book ($29.95) will benefit the Community Foundation of the New River Valley. Copies are available by calling 540-961-6706 or by e-mail at info@joelswilliams.com.
Williams is also a contributing author of "The Complete Guide to Estate & Financial Planning in Turbulent Times" and "Wealth: Enhancement and Preservation."
