The Chamber Focus |

Thank you all for the overwhelming confidence you have shown in this Chamber. As a member organization, the story is about YOU. You are taking advantage of the networking, referrals, contacts, and recognition that is offered as a Chamber member. Member-to-member discounts are increasing, attendance at events is increasing, and we (Chamber directors, Ambassadors, and committee members) are looking for more ways to offer value to membership. A survey is being prepared and your input is needed. Look for it in your email this month!
The Build Community committee has been diligently working with Montgomery County Public Schools and needs you to work with them as a volunteer at the Reality Store on Tuesday, May 17th. This store is being held at Blacksburg High School on Tuesday from 7:30 am to 2:30 pm. Volunteers can call me and I'll connect you with the coordinator. The goal of this program is a better understanding of financial management. 15 more volunteers are needed for Tuesday. Also, the Chamber wants to support MCPS and Ms. Blackburn by purchasing "Commit to Graduate" bracelets. Can your company buy bracelets? Total cost is $1,900.
The Chamber is partnering with WordSprint to bring you a free seminar on "Database Management" on Tuesday, June 14th. Seminar will be held at the Holiday Inn University from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and lunch is included. Details of all the topics covered are included in this newsletter. Go to wordsprint.com for online registration. Registrations are on a first-come basis with seats for 60.

REALITY STORE AT BLACKSBURG HIGH SCHOOL
Michelle Dickerson with Montgomery Extension is conducting the Reality Store at Blacksburg High School on May 17th from 7:30 to 2:30 pm. Michelle needs about 20 volunteers from the community to assist with the reality tables at the event.
This exercise is designed to give our high school students a dose of reality as it pertains to the cost of living. Each student is given a salary. They then proceed to visit the tables to purchase the things they need to live. The exercise will demonstrate why it is so important to complete your education or acquire a skill to make a living.
Volunteers will man tables that explain the cost of child care, groceries, cars, insurance, loans, furniture, health care, grooming, and entertainment to name a few. There is no experience necessary to man a table. Complete instructions will be available. Of course, if you have experience in these areas, it would be great to have you work the area of your expertise.
If you can help with the Reality Store, please email Michelle Dickerson at adickerson@vt.edu and let her know who can attend. Even if you can help for only a portion of the day, it would hepful!

VCOM- Helping Victims of Tornados-
Students and faculty at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine - Virginia Campus (VCOM) travelled to Glade Spring, VA to assist the victims of the tornadoes that hit the area this past Sunday. Students and faculty provided medical assistance and prescriptions to eight families and assisted over 30 others. The VCOM team distributed over $3,000 from the school's outreach fund to individuals. Additional students and faculty will be returning to the area as more assistance is needed.
The greatest need according to VCOM's Dean Dixie Tooke-Rawlins who lead the team last Sunday is money for those who were left homeless so they can secure temporary housing. To that end, VCOM is collecting monetary contributions - all of which will go 100% to victims of the tornados. Money will be given directly to those individual by a VCOM student or faculty member.
If you would like to contribute to this effort, please stop by VCOM and provide your contribution to Kelly Varelos at the main desk in the lobby of the main VCOM building.
VCOM collected items for those affected by the tornadoes in Pulaski, Virginia last week and was able to provide many items through the generosity of those who donated. While VCOM's efforts will continue to focus on Southwest, Virginia, a contingency will be going to Alabama this weekend to provide medical and humanitarian relief and food/water/toiletries are being collected for Greene County, TN this week. So, if you would like to donate any of these items instead of cash they be dropped off in the lobby of the VCOM main building. At this time, clothing items are no longer needed.
