A heartfelt thanks to our donors for the past month!  Rest assured that each donation is greatly appreciated, and no donation is too large or too small.  Each item is put to good use--items that we ourselves cannot use are gladly shared with other rescues and shelters in the area. It's a win-win situation!

July 2010 Greetings
welcome

We hope that everyone had a safe and happy Fourth of July celebration--the weather was perfect for a weekend outing!  With the summer heat really starting to kick in, we hope that you will each remember how quickly the temperature inside a car can heat up.  Read our article, "Pets in Cars" for more information on keeping your pets safe!
July's Shining Stars
smiling star

In honor of the wonderful cats in shelters everywhere that desperately need homes, we have extended Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat through July!  Adopt any cat or kitten at a half-off donation ($67.50, normally $135) between now and July 31, 2010!  OR adopt any two felines, of any ages, for the adoption donation of one.  Help us celebrate by adopting a deserving feline as a permanent part of your family!

Clint
July's Orphan of the Month!

Clint2
Clint still needing a home is quite a mystery to us--he has been waiting for his forever home since November of 2009!  He's fun and active yet also likes to cuddle up in your lap for lots of love and attention.  He can be a little shy when you first meet him but warms up quickly, and would love the opportunity to show off some of the skills he learned during basic training classes.  This smart, handsome boy would prefer an all-adult household that likes to get active with their canine companion, and simply needs someone to give him a chance!  White with black, approximate date of birth 6/1/08.

Visit us on-line or call us at 214-349-ELPO (3576) for more information on other wonderful animals for adoption!
Volunteers of the Month
June 2010

thank youToo hot?  Too cold?  Too rainy for an offsite adoption event?  None of that ever stops our volunteers of the month, Nicole Menaul and her daughter, Lea.  You can count on them to be at adoption events come rain or shine, showing off our orphans.  From the Irish Festival, to the recent car wash, Nicole and Lea are there, walking dogs and telling people how wonderful they are.  These events have found many forever homes, and it couldn't happen without volunteers like Nicole and Lea.

There's no denying it--volunteers make an amazing impact on the lives of the animals in our care.  They provide comfort to the timid and injured, playtime for the energetic, and most importantly--unconditional love that some of these wonderful animals have never experienced before!  For information on how you, too, can become a volunteer, visit us on-line or call us at 214-349-ELPO (3576).
June Arrivals and Adoptions
A Plea for Help for our Furry Friends

Each month we give you information on the admissions and adoptions for the previous month.  We really enjoy letting you know about the animals that have found their happy endings, or have found their way to us so that we can help them start their journey to finding their forever homes.

But the reality of what we do isn't always about happy endings.  It's about limits of space, funds, and the physical ability to handle a large influx of animals.  The reality of what we do is the fact that 24 animals were admitted into East Lake Pet Orphanage during the month of June, while only 6 were adopted out

We are forced to turn away countless animals on a daily basis because there simply aren't enough homes.  This is probably the hardest part of what we do--having to listen to the tough situations that people find themselves in, hearing the sad stories of what some of these pets have gone through on the streets after being abandoned by the people that were supposed to have their best interests at heart...  The reality is that we can't help them all.  And based on the high number of animals currently in our care, we find ourselves in a tough position as we acknowledge that we cannot continue to admit additional animals until we get enough adopted into homes to open up space for more.  We need YOUR help to make this happen.

Visit our website, updated weekly, where we have

photos and descriptions of the deserving creatures currently available for adoption--know that this is just the tip of the iceberg, as we have MANY more animals behind the scenes still completing the treatments needed to be ready to go into a permanent, loving home.  While you yourself might not be in a position to adopt right now, maybe a friend or family member is looking to add to their household.  Make a donation to help support the basic medical needs that each of these orphans have.  Or become a volunteer and spend some quality time with the animals as they wait for that special someone to come through the door.  Together, we can help make a difference in their lives!

Pets in Cars

dog in carThis topic is a serious one so I'll be quite blunt--being left alone in a car can kill your pet.
Don't believe me?  Think about the stories you hear each summer about young, healthy children that are found dead after their parent or guardian left them in a locked car.  It's no different for your pet!

Every time you park your car and run into the store "just for a minute", you are putting your pets life at risk.  Your impression of what a minute may be is usually off by quite a bit--you may remember just "one more thing" that you need to do while you're away from your vehicle, or you may get stuck in the 8 items or less line behind the person who thinks that means they can get away with 50 containers each of 8 different flavors of yogurt.  While you're tapping your toes and muttering obscenities under your breath, the air conditioner in your car is not running.  The hot sun is beating down on your car (parking in the shade and/or cracking the windows is NOT enough to make a difference), and on an 85 degree day the temperature in your car can reach 120 degrees in just minutes.  Folks, this is Texas.  An 85 degree is considered downright cool, so you can easily imagine how much higher the temperature inside a locked car can climb on a 100+ degree day!  Outdoor temperatures as low as 70 degrees can be considered dangerous, and it just isn't worth the risk!

A body temperature of 107 degrees can cause brain damage or death in an animal.  So what do you do if your pet overheats?  Water is critical.  Get the animal wet with cool (NOT cold) water immediately.  The evaporation of the water off of the skin will cool your pet faster than either full immersion, or having your pet drink cool water. Take your loved one directly to a veterinarian, as every second counts.  Even if your pet seems to be improving, it is crucial that potential kidney damage be addressed by a professional.  If you see an animal locked in a car, notify both the manager of the store and the police.  Your call can save that animals life!

You love your pet enough to want to enjoy his company by taking him for a ride in the first place, so love him enough to leave him home where he's safe and will be waiting to give you a warm welcome when you return.

Maggie Rose

Maggie Rose pool

"Hello everyone,

Just wanted to take a little time to let you know that Maggie Rose has settled in just fine here with us.  She actually had an encounter with my three year old granddaughter and while we were watchful she loves children.  She wants to be petted and is still jumping on them some but is responding well to commands.  She has full run of the back yard, drinks from the pool which is a saline pool and seems to respect it.

No bad habits although if one heard her "talking" to us they would think she was growling but we have come to understand she is "talking".  She loves to ride in the car and is very well behaved, she is a good girl for the groomer and is a pleasure to take out to PetsMart for a doggy day out shopping and will select the "toy" of choice for her shopping trip.

Thank you all again for selecting us to be her forever home.

Mike and Pat Barbee
Denton, Texas"
