Pet parent Donna Summerfield sent us photos of these two handsome pals in March, in honor of their one year anniversary of joining her family!  They're both doing great and certainly look as if they're nice and comfie in their home.  Happy Belated Anniversary, boys!

Next Training Class Starts June 9th

dog trainingHi Everyone,

For those of you that have been asking about the new class schedule for this next session, here it is:

Basic Obedience - basic command and tricks (sit, down, stay, walking on a loose leash, shake, bow...)

Wednesday June 9-July 14, 7 PM at East Lake Veterinary Hospital (one night a week for 6 weeks)

or

Sunday June 13-July 18, 7 PM at the park (one night a week for 6 weeks)

Advanced Obedience - "chained commands" and real life situations (we take 3 classes and go to a book store, a retail outlet and a restaurant with our dogs)

Sunday June 13- July 18, 8 PM at the park (one night a week for 6 weeks)

In the advanced/continuing class, your dog should be able to do a sit, down, touch, and stay fairly reliably OR have been in a beginning class at good dog fetch. I start on chaining commands in this class. So the first command is "go to your spot or bed", which is a touch, down and stay. We do three classes with commands and then we start going into public places with your dogs so they can learn/practice their manners in a public environment. It's a lot of fun and the purpose is to learn how to be able to take your dog with you, no matter what you want to do.

I have made the Sunday classes later in the day to help offset the heat and to not have our dogs in the hottest part of the day.

Cost for all classes is $85.00 (for the 6 week session)

Registration is now open for those of you that are interested. Please let me know if you need a registration form.

Car Wash to Benefit Homeless Pets
June 19thcar wash line
Volunteers will be making bubbles for a good cause!  The car wash will take place on Saturday, June 19, from 10 AM until 3 PM at the Sonic Drive-In at 9119 Garland Road.  In addition to the proceeds made from the car wash, East Lake Pet Orphanage will also be getting a portion of restaurant sales during the hours of 10 AM and 3 PM!  So get a clean car and a yummy snack, all while supporting the homeless animals of East Lake Pet Orphanage!

Volunteers are needed, so please call Shelia Luna or Pam Nowell at 214-342-3100 if you are available!

If you can't stay the entire time, an hour or two of your time would be greatly appreciated.  We are also in need of donated towels, sun screen, buckets, nozzles, paper towels, window cleaner, car wash soap, and bottled water for our dedicated volunteers, so if you have any of these items (new or used towels are greatly appreciated) that you are able to donate, please drop them off at the orphanage (10101 E. Northwest Highway, located inside East Lake Veterinary Hospital).

Of course, even if you aren't available to volunteer or donate supplies, stop by for a car wash.  The orphans will appreciate your help and you will have a sparkling clean car to benefit a great cause!

June's Shining Stars
smiling star

June is Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat month!  In honor of the wonderful cats in shelters everywhere that desperately need homes, we are offering adoptions on any feline, any age, at half-donation ($67.50, normally $135).  OR adopt any two felines, of any ages, for the adoption donation of one.  Help us celebrate by adopting a deserving feline as a permanent part of your family!

For more information on our ShiningStars, visit our Pet Stars page!

Neko
May's Orphan of the Month!

NekoNeko (Japanese word for "cat") has had quite a journey!  Found as a stray, she was taken in by a Good Samaritan who wanted to help her find a home.  She did all the right things-love, food, shelter, and taking her in to get her taken care of medically with vaccinations and spaying so that she wouldn't add more homeless kittens to the world.  But soon after her spay, Neko became ill and her Good Samaritan knew that she had done all that she could for her and brought her to East Lake Pet Orphanage for the next step of her journey!  Even when she wasn't feeling well, Neko proved herself to be unbelievably sweet-you have to meet her in person to see just how amazing the personality is for this petite little charmer!  She's never met a stranger, and will do well in almost any type of household.  She has a mild heart murmur that comes and goes, and is not felt to need any type of medication-monitoring on a regular basis by a veterinarian (six months from now, and if all is well at that time then typical annual examinations should be all she needs) should keep her in tip-top shape for many years to come!  Black, approximate date of birth 1/1/06.

s on-line or call us at 214-349-ELPO (3576) for more information on other wonderful animals for adoption!
Volunteer of the Month
May 2010

thank youWe had so many volunteers that made the 2009 Wine on the Roof fundraising event that there are actually many people that deserved to be selected this past month.  But one volunteer truly needs to be acknowledged.  Therefore, our Volunteer of the Month for May 2010 was Kelye Ellison

Kelye never hesitated when approached about being the official Event Coordinator, and I think we all agree that she did an amazing job!  We never could have done it without her, and we can't thank her enough for the countless hours that she donated to this important event!

There's no denying it--volunteers make an amazing impact on the lives of the animals in our care.  They provide comfort to the timid and injured, playtime for the energetic, and most importantly--unconditional love that some of these wonderful animals have never experienced before!  For information on how you, too, can become a volunteer, visit us on-line or call us at 214-349-ELPO (3576).
May Arrivals and Adoptions

Visit us on-line
to see photos and descriptions of the deserving creatures currently available for adoption.  The following orphans arrived and/or were adopted during the last month:

New Arrivals

Dawn, Dusk and Twilight are three stray kittens that are available for adoption now.  Visit the pages for Dawn, Dusk and Twilight for more information.

Barbie, Houston, Shirley and Tucker are four kittens that were abandoned at Second Chance Treasures (the resale shop benefiting the homeless pets of East Lake Pet Orphanage) and subsequently named after shop team members.  Houston and Tucker are available for adoption now, and we hope to have Barbie and Shirley available within one week.

Macaroni and Tissie are two kittens that were abandoned at a veterinary hospital in a Boston Market box.  We hope to have them available for adoption in one week.

Alvin,

Eleanor, Jeanette, Simon, and Thea are five kittens that were found as strays.  They are currently in foster care.  We hope to have them available for adoption in late June.

Quincy and

Rocco (ferrets) and Winslow (a rabbit) were surrendered by their owner (a teacher) when her classroom science project was discontinued.  Quincy and Rocco have already been adopted together, and Winslow has already been adopted as well.  Both adoptive families heard about them through word-of-mouth.

Sunkist and her four red tabby kittens,

Crush, Julius, O.J.and Tang, were found in an attic soon after the kittens were born.  They are currently in foster care and we hope to have them available for adoption in July.

Captain Wedge, a Basset Hound puppy, was surrendered by his owner who could not pay for critical care in a serious illness (we strongly suspect Parvo though he has tested negative for this).  He is still very ill though we are seeing signs of improvement.  We will have a better feel for his anticipated date of availability as he recovers.

Sunday, a very young stray kitten, is also receiving care for a serious illness.  She is battling an upper respiratory infection but is also showing signs of improvement.  We hope to have her ready for adoption in July.

Tia, originally adopted in 2006, was returned when her adopter was no longer able to care for her.  We hope to have her available for adoption in one week.
