April 2010 Greetings
April showers bring May flowers, and the abundance of beautiful color lining the local roadways is proof that spring has arrived and that May is just around the corner! Along with spring comes kitten season, and the calls have already started--countless kittens are born this time of year so help us keep spreading the word that spaying/neutering saves lives! While every pet deserves a home, there simply aren't enough homes for them all so do your part to continue this very important message!
We'd like to take a moment to say a special thank you to Vanessa Brown at Channel 33, who visited with Dr. Karen Fling again and two more of our adorable orphans! A segment on animal adoption, featuring Daisy and Melvin, aired on Sunday, March 28th! Visit the Channel 33 website to see these cute critters in action! |

Remembering Elliott In Memory of Elliott Terrell, Former Orphan In late 2004, East Lake Pet Orphanage had the honor of working with a Springer Spaniel mix by the name of Elliott. He was quite a clown, and brought much joy to us during his stay in the orphanage. He had a severe injury to one of his legs that required surgery by a specialist, and it was with the donations from our supporters that this was able to happen.
Our experience with this wonderful dog inspired the creation of The Elliott Fund so that we can have emergency funds available in cases such as his where surgery or treatment by a specialist is required in order for the animal to have reasonable quality of life (without surgery we would have had to euthanize this handsome and otherwise healthy gentleman). Elliott spent many months in foster care as he recovered from surgery and was subsequently adopted by his foster mom. She then trained him to become a therapy dog and he brought much joy to the lives of many people!
We recently received a message from Robin--I think the love that she had for sweet Elliott shines through with the message that we are including below. He touched any lives, and we will forever remember him.

"For those of you who knew my special man, I wanted to let you know I had to say goodbye tonight.
I know we all tend to "wax poetic" about our wonderful dogs. There will never be another so and so.... he was the best dog ever.....And it is all true.
I want to say goodbye to MY friend by remembering all of the good he did. As a dog who was thrown away by his previous owners, and lucky enough to have a benefactor to buy him a bionic knee.....to coming to me as a foster, passing his Delta certification and helping so many kids, I can say he touched a lot of lives.
Not only did he give back to the human community, he was a piece of my heart. He was so special at the Orphanage that they named a fund after him. Allowing other orphans in need to have the expensive health care they needed instead of being put down, so they too, could find their forever family.
Elliott will always occupy a piece of my heart. May his hips no longer be feeble, may his knees allow him to run, and his spirit fly free. I will miss you my friend.

Bird Chauffeurs Needed
Volunteer Opportunity
East Lake Veterinary Hospitalis a drop-off location for injured and orphaned wild birds. From there they must be transported to our area bird rehabber, Kathy Rogers (Rogers Wildlife Rehabilitation Center) in Hutchins (approximately 10 minutes south of downtown). Volunteer drivers are neededto pick up the birds (they will already be in boxes/crates ready to travel) and drive them to Kathy's.
What's involved? Currently we're operating on the winter schedule; the volunteer driver for the day phones East Lake Veterinary Hospital in the afternoon, allowing enough time to arrive there between 3-3:15 p.m. If there are birds that day, you pick them up and drive them to Roger's Wildlife. They need to arrive there by 4 p.m. (The one exception to this is Saturdays since East Lake Veterinary Hospital closes at 3, so any birds must be picked up by then.) During fall and winter there are very few birds that come in, but there must be a driver available just in case. During the busy baby season, approximately April through September, the drivers pick-up a bit later in the day.
Presently, we're in need of 'chauffeurs' for Mondays, Wednesdays & Thursdays.
Last baby season East Lake Veterinary Hospital helped over 300 birds find their way to the Rehabilitation Center! This is a wonderful program, but for it to succeed we must have drivers. If you'd like to sign-up please e-mail bell-susan@sbcglobal.net, or phone Susan 214-328-8351. It's a fun project, and a great way to help out our feathered friends! Or for more information, visit The Bird Chaffers webpage. |

Penguin
March's Orphan of the Month!
This happy-go-lucky gal would love to play with you! A one-year-old Pit Bull Mix, she's tons of fun and always has a bright and happy disposition. Despite her playful and active personality, she likes her share of snuggle time with her favorite humans, too-she's a lap dog in a big dog body! She does well with other large dogs, and loves kids, but would prefer a home without cats or small breed dogs. Black and white, approximate date of birth 1/1/09.
Visit us on-line or call us at 214-349-ELPO (3576) for more information on other wonderful animals for adoption! |

Volunteer of the Month March 2010
Our Volunteer of the Month for March 2010 was Linda Sanderson! Linda just celebrated her one year anniversary as an East Lake Pet Orphanage volunteer in March. The consistency of having a familiar face interact with the orphans on a regular basis adds tremendously to the benefits of the volunteer program. Since volunteers seem to "specialize," we can easily identify Linda as a Cat Person. She loves the cats and kittens and socializes and loves them on a regular basis!
There's no denying it--volunteers make an amazing impact on the lives of the animals in our care. They provide comfort to the timid and injured, playtime for the energetic, and most importantly--unconditional love that some of these wonderful animals have never experienced before! For information on how you, too, can become a volunteer, visit us on-line or call us at 214-349-ELPO (3576). |
Happy Tails
Kibby
Scott and Friend | "The cat in front is Scott in his new home with one of his new friends. He is now fully integrated into the "tribe" and is obviously a happy cat. Hank says he simply loves his unusual looks; thinks his fur is beautiful and that his shape makes him look exotic.
This adoption has proven a good one as I knew it would.
Linda Sanderson" |
