"Dogs are our link to paradise. They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring--it was peace."~Milan Kundera

Spread the Word
On-Line Interactionnetwork

More and more people are using the internet to connect with friends and family. Facebook is a popular "social utility that helps connect you with the people around you." It can be used to keep up with friends and family, reconnect with old classmates, share photos and videos, and help spread the word about causes that are important to you.

Don't forget that East Lake Pet Orphanage is a group on Facebook, so link your personal profile to the orphanage today! This is a great way for your network of friends to effect positive change by spreading the word about the orphanage and to help us continue our efforts to rescue and rehabilitate orphaned and abandoned animals in our community. Just log in to your usual Facebook account and search for "East Lake Pet Orphanage" (just type it in as if you were searching for an individual's name).

FUN FACT--We include the option to have the newsletters show up as a Facebook link!  Just click on the "share" button at the bottom of each issue to have it appear in your newsfeed!

February 2010 Greetings
welcome

1500!!!  That's the magic number for the month, as we are excited to announce that our January adoption of Jake, a Mountain Cur, was our 1500th adoption!  Thank you to everyone for the ongoing support that helped make this possible!
A Special Request--You Can Still Help Make a Difference!
Annual Fund Campaign

graphEach year, East Lake Pet Orphanage is flooded with innocent dogs, cats, puppies and kittens in need of loving homes.  We are a no-kill animal shelter devoted to connecting people and pets for the mutual enrichment of life.

As a community shelter, we rely solely on private donations from people like you to provide life saving health care and preventive treatment for whatever time is needed to find a successful match for our orphaned pets.  When you donate to East Lake Pet Orphanage, you prevent euthanasia and give a second chance to a pet in need. Each of the pets we help have their own story...

Lucy's life was saved when she was found on the street by a Good Samaritan, and she in turn saved the life of a young puppy on the brink of death. A healthy, friendly girl, she was the perfect candidate to be a life saving blood donor. Lucy has since been adopted where she is a happy girl with plenty of fun playtime to keep her busy.

Lucy and her new family are a great fit!  Her brother, Jif, is also an ELPO adoptee!

Michelin was found when a kind woman felt both her front and back tires roll over something in her driveway. Michelin was rushed to East Lake Pet Orphanage where emergency care saved his life. After several weeks of rehabilitation, he was able to be adopted into a new home where he is expected to live a normal, healthy life!

This is just a glimpse into the lives of just two of the many abandoned animals who touch our hearts each year. Finding permanent, loving homes for the many animals in our care is not an easy task...they require food, shelter and medical care while they are with us...three things that cost more and more each year.

Won't you join us in giving these deserving animals a second chance? Whether you can spare $5 or $50, your tax deductible contribution (see donation options below) can help us cover our current year's deficit of $33,659.96. Together we can continue to change the lives of Dallas animals and families by providing a fresh start for homeless pets in loving homes such as yours. Your support will make a difference!

Make your donation in person or by mail at East Lake Pet Orphanage, 10101 E. Northwest Highway, Dallas, Texas  75238.  Of you can make your donation today via Pay Pal!

Good Dog Fetch
A Message from Robin Terrell

 dog training
HHH...EEE...LLLLLL......OOOOOO 2010.  In the 70's, I was sure the world would look like the Jetson's, but alas, no flying cars or "Ruby" robots to help us out.

But many of us do have dogs that act like Astro.  What better time than the present to start a little training with your furry friend?  You definitely want to be ready for the spring, when the weather is beautiful, the car windows are down, and your dog is hanging their head out of your window, tongue and ears flapping in the wind.

CGC Classes:

Does your dog already have some basic manners?  Come join us for a review of the 10 requirements to pass the Canine Good Citizen test and get your dog his/her very own title.  This will be a 4 class session, 3 classes for training and review. The last class will be each team's evaluation.  (For the Canine Good Citizen requirements, go to www.AKC.org and click on CGC.)

Sunday afternoons 3-4 PM: February 14 through March 7

Monday nights 7-8 PM: February 15 through March 8

Cost $55.00 (including evaluation)

Basic Obedience Classes:

Does your dog listen to you?  Are you tired of having that furry face looking at you with a blank stare?  It's time for you and your dog to learn some basic obedience/manners.  6 week sessions will get you two command and 1 trick per class.  All with positive reinforcement techniques.  AAANNNDDD....the best part is puppy play time at the end of each class!

Wednesday nights 7-8 PM: February. 17 - March 24

Sunday afternoons 4-5 PM: February 14 through March 21

Cost $85.00

Advanced Obedience Classes:

For those of you who have already been through my basic class, this class will ramp it up and take you and your dog to the next level.  This is where we start chaining commands.  In other words, we take several individual commands to make something totally different.  Example: Fetch = "get it", "bring it" and "drop it".  We will also do a few field trips to local establishments that are dog friendly, to train your dogs in a real life, let's hang out at the book store or restaurant situation.

Sunday afternoons 5-6 PM: February 21 - March 28

Cost $85.00

An added bonus for any of the classes that are based out of East Lake Veterinary Hospital:  A portion of your class fee goes to support the homeless animals of East Lake Pet Orphanage!!!

Email me at robin@gooddogfetch.com for a registration form or with any questions.

***A registration form needs to be filled out and returned to me to hold a spot in class. Class limit is 8 dogs per session***

Looking forward to a fantastic 2010 with you and your 4 legged friends.

Robin Terrell

Vivian
February's Orphan of the Month!

VivianSassy Vivian is quite a character!  Originally admitted in 2008 with a litter of kittens, she was adopted out but due to an unexpected move her owners were unable to keep her and she was returned in 2009.  Vivian showed a spunky streak that was deemed to be best suited for an all-adult household--however, her personality has actually worked in her favor, allowing us to help mold her behavior into a little repertoire of tricks!  With clicker training Vivian loves to show off her skills at the following commands: sit, target, spin around and high five!

VivianVisit us on-line or call us at 214-349-ELPO (3576) for more information on other wonderful animals for adoption!
Volunteer of the Month
January 2010

thank you
Our Volunteer of the Month for December was Jenna Sabot!  Jenna is a relatively new volunteer who has committed herself to East Lake Pet Orphanage.  She plays no favorites, and is to be found playing with the dogs as well as with the cats.  What is really impressive is to see her outside playing with the dogs during some of our coldest spells, with the dogs in their fur coats, and Jenna bundled up but not intimidated by the 30 degree weather.

There's no denying it--volunteers make an amazing impact on the lives of the animals in our care.  They provide comfort to the timid and injured, playtime for the energetic, and most importantly--unconditional love that some of these wonderful animals have never experienced before!  For information on how you, too, can become a volunteer, visit us on-line or call us at 214-349-ELPO (3576).
