Samhain Times Past

Have you ever heard that May is an unlucky month in which to be married?  While researching Tying the Knot:  A Gender-Neutral Guide to Handfastings or Weddings for Pagans and Goddess Worshipers (Creatrix Press, 2004), I was surprised to find that in Rome the month of May was dedicated to
Hecate.  A festival, Lemures, was held in May in which the dead were given offerings of beans and the Vestals made salt cakes from the first wheat of the season to honor them.  These offerings were made to the restless dead "to placate them and to ask them to redeem" their descendents.

This custom was claimed by Christians and in an effort to remove its pagan origins the date of All Saint's Day was established in Rome on May 13th.  In the eighth century the feast of All Saints was shifted to its current date so that it could be used again to co-opt a pagan holiday, the Celtic pagan festival of Samhain.
