Magical Moons
January's moon was the largest full moon of 2009, while December's moon was the largest full moon of 2008.
As I understand it, the way the Moon orbits the Earth is not a perfect circle. As a result, when the moon's elliptical orbit moves it closer to the Earth, the Moon appears larger. In December and January, the Moon was close to the Earth and it was full at the same time. And She was magnificent...did you see Her?For me, the Moon is magic. I can be watching the Moon here in snowy Wisconsin and someone in Vancouver can be watching the same moon at the same time. In that moment, the Moon transcends space. She is here with me in my woods and, yet, She has just risen over the Atlantic in Nicaragua.
I feel linked through time by the Moon. I know my grandmothers watched that same Moon...ever changing, but ever the same. I know the ancient women watched Her in wonder (as I do now) as She grew and changed...bringing the tides...calling forth their cycles. When I stand at my altar, cast my circle and move between worlds the Moon is my model. She exemplifies the astounding simplicity and astonishing wonder of that magical axiom: "All time is now, all space is here."- Jade River Consistery Executive

WTI Online ProgramThe Women's Thealogical Institute Online Programs (WTIOP)WTI is now offering a pilot program of WTI studies online. These are not just classes, but the full WTI program offered to women online. Since 1988 the Women's Thealogical Institute (WTI) has been offering on-site training for women who wish to further their understanding of the Goddess, women's spirituality, and/or women's witchcraft. Being a part of WTI lets women learn, practice, and share their spiritual work with others on similar paths. Instruction and dialogue will take place in an online format. WTIOP groups have 5 - 15 members who interact to report progress on activities, share knowledge, and learn together. You may be in a group with other women from around the world or from your neighborhood. WTI is a multidimensional school and seminary. It offers organized, but flexible, curricula comprised of self-directed spiritual development activities designed to further both personal and spiritual growth. Participation in WTI may lead to certification and/or ministerial credentials. This group will start in February. For more information or to register for WTIOP programs, click here.

Daily Celebrations February 2-Feast of Brigid, Imbolc/Candlemas.Light a candle in each window and have the youngest female in the household go outside with a lit candle and circle the house inviting Brigid (pronounced "Breed") in. Leave one candle lit for Her all night to invite the further return of the light/season and/or fertility into the house and to the land. Bless all the candles in your house and consider buying all you will need for the coming year and blessing them also. February 3-Feast of Mary of the BearsLeave offerings to the bears in the woods on your altar. Do something to encourage the protection of Grizzly bears that are an endangered species in a majority of the United States. Wear bear jewelry. Put bear pictures or statues on your altar. February 4-Setsubunm, Japanese Bean Throwing and Lantern FestivalSome ancient cultures believed that departed souls lived in beans. We could symbolically say that the spirit of winter lived in some dried beans and to throw them away brings and end to the season. The lighting of lanterns can be seen as encouraging the light and warmth of the season to return. |
