The extraordinary transformation and renewal of a City block in Downtown Berkeley will be celebrated, as Berkeley's new Dharma College, along with the Mangalam Research Center for Buddhist Languages, Tibetan Aid Project, and Dharma Publishing Bookstore, open their doors for the first time for public tours. The block-long Open House features guided building tours, informational talks, a Tibetan Art exhibition, live music and dance performances, refreshments and an opportunity to meet the Dharma College faculty and other representatives of these beneficial non-profit organizations.

Sunday, October 14 | 11:00 am - 4:00 pm
Shattuck Ave from Haste Ave. to Rose St.
Berkeley's first Open Streets project, Sunday Streets, is October 14th, 2012!

Sunday Streets Berkeley is a block party for people to experience Downtown Berkeley in a whole new way. Shattuck will be car-free from Haste to Rose, so people can walk, bike, skate, dance, and play in the open streets. Between 5,000-10,000 people are expected to attend this event.

This is not a typical street fair - No outside vendors allowed! Instead, merchants along the route and local organizations creatively engage customers through inviting storefronts, outdoor seating, parklets, interactive activities, classes, performers, musicians, dancers, educational experiences, demonstration, special menus, and more! Open Streets allow the public to discover new and long-time businesses, and create new community connections. Sunday Streets San Francisco has been ongoing for 5 years now, and many merchants along the San Francisco routes say it is one of the busiest days of the year.

As a local business/non-profit organization... make your storefront inviting and offer interactive activitiesSunday Streets Berkeley would love to highlight your business' special activity and/or extended storefront in online marketing, social media, press and community outreach. Let them know what you are up to at [email protected]. The earlier you commit to leading an activity, the earlier you'll be featured.

As an individual... be an Activity Leader, Performer, or Volunteer!
Activity leaders organize and run an interactive program that encourages physical activity, stimulates interest in healthy, safety and the environment, or is just simply engaging and fun!
Performers can play music, do martial arts, perform a circus routine, do a BMX/skateboarding course, dance, sing, make pottery, create art, etc. Any amplified sound needs Sunday Streets organizer approval.
Volunteers help spread the word about Sunday Streets before the event to local businesses along the route, and to the greater community. On the event-day, volunteers help set up, staff the information booth, moniter intersections, and help clean up; they receive a limited-edition 2012 Sunday Streets t-shirt and a delicious lunch.
