Caltopia was a huge success - Thanks to all merchants that donated!
Thank you, Downtown Berkeley merchants that donated gift certificates to the Caltopia booth, and helped make our presence a huge success! We awarded over 30 gift cards as prizes to students that will soon be discovering the wonderful restaurants, shops and arts that we offer in the Downtown.

Offering Discounts for Cal Football Games
Saturday, September 1 First Home Game
Memorial Stadium
Cal Football returns to Memorial Stadium here in Berkeley on Saturday, September 1st. This is a huge opportunity for you to serve the over 50,000 fans that come to Downtown Berkeley before and after the game by offering specials to ticket holders. You are especially encouraged to offer additional promotions to season ticket holders, who are guaranteed to return to Downtown Berkeley for Cal Football Home games on 9/8, 9/29, 10/6, 10/20, 11/2, 11/10.
The Downtown Berkeley Association will be aggressively marketing the Downtown businesses offering football specials that the ambassador team will promote to the public each game day along Center St. and other main routes to Memorial Stadium. In addition, the DBA will publicize these specials through the eNews, and to the DBA facebook page and twitter followers to help market your business to the over 750,000 Cal Football fans attending home games this fall.
Please contact the DBA if you will be offering specials to ticket holders and/or season ticket holders.

Sunday Streets is Coming to Berkeley - How Your Business Can Participate:
Sunday, October 14 | 11:00 am - 4:00 pm
Shattuck Ave, from Haste to Rose
Berkeley's first Open Streets project, Sunday Streets, is October 14th 2012!

Sunday Streets Berkeley is a block party for people to experience Downtown Berkeley in a whole new way. Shattuck will be car-free from Haste to Rose, so people can walk, bike, skate, dance, and play in the open streets. Between 5,000-10,000 people are expected to attend this event.
This is not a typical street fair - No outside vendors allowed. Instead, the focus is on you, the merchants on the route! Attendees spend more time exploring businesses.  especially those with inviting storefronts, and those offering interactive activities. Sunday Streets San Francisco has been ongoing for 5 years now, and many merchants along the San Francisco routes say it is one of the busiest days of the year. The public has a special love for these events. Open Streets allow the public to discover new and long-time businesses, and allow your businesses to creatively engage your customers, and create new community connections.
Business participation - How YOU can take advantage of Sunday Streets Berkeley
Extend your storefront into the parking lane in front of your business for:
  • demonstrations
  • live musicians
  • dancers and performers
  • free classes
  • fitness-oriented programs
  • other interactive and creative activities
  • outdoor cafe-style seating & benches
  • Attractive, special-occasion storefronts
  • special menus
Sunday Streets Berkeley would love to highlight your business in online marketing, social media, press and community outreach. Free classes, special menus, anything that engages the community in an interesting way is interesting to Sunday Streets Berkeley. Let them know what you are up to at sundaystreetsberkeley@gmail.com. The earlier you commit to leading an activity, the earlier you'll be featured.
Want ideas for ways to engage the public? Check out photos and press coverage of free yoga classes, dance classes, educational experiences and the other interactive activities businesses are inspired to lead at Sunday Streets San Francisco!
Key rules of thumb:
  • Participation is free if you are an independently owned business and provide an interactive activity, or a non-profit organization. Larger businesses are welcome to participate as a sponsor.
  • Amplification requires permission. Sunday Streets Berkeley is organizing local musical, dance and fitness-oriented programs and these offerings must be coordinated. Let us know in advance what you plan to do at sundaystreetsberkeley@gmail.com.
  • Activities and seating must primarily occupy the parking lane.
  • Structures other than seating are not permitted.
  • Sidewalks should not be obstructed.
  • Vending in the street is not permitted.
Your efforts will be rewarded: Open Streets offer new economic opportunities for commercial districts. In a recent study of an Open Streets event in St. Louis, 73% of attendees spent money at a restaurant or store along the route, 68% became aware of a store or restaurant that was new to them, and 94% responded "Yes - Positively" to the question: "Does Open Streets change your feelings about the city?"
