Magnes by the Marsh: Cordelia Mein Kind--Limited Run
February 2-5 The Marsh Berkeley, $15 - $35 sliding scale Inspired by Shakespeare's King Lear, Cordelia, Mein Kind combines original interviews (between a contemporary Cordelia and her father, a Yiddish-speaking Holocaust survivor recently deceased who lived in 'exile' in the Melbourne suburb of Bentleigh), and other visual imagery, with a language that is gestural, poetic, direct and physical. This challenging and unique performance work is a duet for film and live body; a personal exploration of a present-day Cordelia-like character revealed through language, physicality, image and film. Magnes by the Marsh is a partnership between The Marsh Theater and The Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life presenting theatrical performances with innovative aspects of contemporary Jewish culture. |
Monday, February 13, 7-9pm The David Brower Center, Presented with The Art, Technology, and Culture Colloquium of the UC Berkeley Center for New Media Outside of the metropolis, rural areas are increasingly becoming contested zones where the most pressing issues of our time are being played out ... environmental sustainability, global economics versus local economies, issues of food production and genetic modification, and cultural commodification. García-Dory's experimental intervention in rural Spain, called "Inland / Campo Adentro," engages specifically with issues affecting the relation between culture-nature now, embodied within the contexts of landscape, the rural, desires and expectations related with identity aspects, crisis, utopy and social change. |
