The Green Earth Cafe & Bakery opened yesterday in Downtown Berkeley on Center Street's Restaurant Row, bringing a Local Organic Vegan Ethical Sustainable (L.O.V.E.S.) menu based on Macrobiotic principals. Owners Barbara Johnston-Brown and Ciren Zhuoga offer a tasty selection of salads, soups, pizza, sandwiches, wraps, unigiri, burritos, tacos, and desserts that include cookies, cakes, pies and puddings. Ingredients prioritize local organic produce and vendors, who source organic ingredients such as Morell's Breads and Hodo Tofu. Menu items and a Green Earth Special Meal are prepared fresh each day. Initially, the cafe will offer daily light breakfast and full lunch. Over time, they'll expand to dinners and weekend brunches, along with beer and wine service.
Owner Barbara Johnston-Brown's broad experience includes running a catering company, teaching cooking classes, and working as a private chef and pastry chef. She hosts a popular lecture dinner night at her home and produces the "Wonderful Macrobiotic Women's Weekend Gathering". She began cooking and baking at a very early age with her two grandmothers. After working as an RN for 15 years in critical care for patients of all ages, Barbara discovered the vegan diet and its potential to change people's lives.
Co-owner Ciren Zhuoga is originally from Tibet where she was a doctor of herbalism and accupuncture. She most recently cooks for Treasure Island Job Corps and at Manzanita Restaurant in Oakland.
