GUERRILLA GIRLS' GUIDE TO BEHAVING BADLY
Spring 2011
|
Greetings!
All over the world, we meet lots of people -- age 8 to 80 -- who are unafraid to call themselves feminists, and who use feminism as a platform for art, activism and culture jamming. The "f" word lives! Women's Rights, Civil Rights and GLBT Rights are the great human rights movements of our time. The world is slowly changing, but there's still a really long way to go.

MS. BEHAVING AND CULTURE JAMMING
The Guerrilla Girls have been busy in 2011 doing projects, gigs and workshops at the Neuberger Museum; La Nuit Blanche, Montreal; the College Art Association; Kutztown University; the University of Arizona, Tucson; Northern Michigan University; the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee; and the College of Charleston, SC. Coming soon: U of California, Riverside; Sweden; Finland; and an exhibition at Rutgers in New Jersey. Next fall: Columbia College, Chicago; Duke; and more. See our schedule here. |
THE GIRLS FROM IPANEMA ... AND SAO PAOLO
Last November we were in Rio for a performance and exhibition at Oi Futuro Art Center. We conducted our first ever workshop in a foreign language -- with the help of a fantastic Portuguese interpreter. The artists who participated came up with some hilarious activist campaigns, one of which explained the Brazilian Wax to 25th century anthropologists. Then we marched in the government-supported Rio Gay Pride Parade on the beach at Ipanema. In Sao Paulo we did gigs at the Bienal, and at SESC, a network of cultural centers funded by business and public taxes. SESC presents art, theatre, and music in gigantic architectural complexes that also house swimming pools, gyms, and libraries. What a difference from the insular, myopic gallery and museum scene we're used to in the US. |
DO WE HAVE TO CHANGE OUR 1986 POSTER? Gender equality is now the law in Spain. State-funded museums must do better by women artists. We spoke at two events in Spain recently to brainstorm how to implement this initiative. A conference called by Xabier Arakistain, director of the Montehermoso Cultural Center (lots of great shows there, by the way) gathered international museum curators, government officials, and artists' groups to talk about how the new law might work. We learned something astounding: there are European curators and museum directors who have made it their personal -- and very public -- mission to increase the number of women artists in their collections. Time for US museums to do what Spain, the Tate Modern, London and the Moderna Museet, Stockholm are doing: collect and exhibit more art by women. |
CRAZY, CREATVE ACTIVISM -- EVEN AT A GRADUATION CEREMONY
So many of you have asked to see the manifesto we gave at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's graduation last year that we decided to post it. This was an all-time great experience for us! In front of 4000 people at the bandshell in Millenium Park, we urged students to make cheap art and dare to be losers in the Olympics of the art market. We bet it was the first time a commencement address was delivered through a gorilla mask! |
HOT OFF THE PRESS, AND WE MEAN HOT! Get a pdf of our latest book, The Hysterical Herstory of Hysteria and How It Was Cured, From Ancient Times Until Now, and take it to bed with you. You'll learn the deep, dark history of the vibrator. |
