In Their Own Words

 MAAV just completed our 5-session teen dating violence prevention program, Healthy Relationships, in Mr. Palmieri's Health classes at the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School.

Written feedback showed that 100% of students:

Can identify the different types of abuse;

Know the warning signs of an abusive relationship;

Understand how abuse occurs via technology;

Know the ingredients of a healthy relationship;

Know how to access resources for themselves or someone else in an abusive relationship.

"I will remember to never let someone take over so much that I am scared to tell someone."

"[The survivor's] story really opened my eyes."

"The whole MAAV team came in to warn us about things early on."

"If there is one thing to take away, it would be to always tell. It could save lives."

"I wish the whole school had a chance to hear this."

Greetings! We are excited to announce that the Melrose Public Schools and MAAV have been awarded a 3-year, $465,000 federal grant for teen dating violence prevention! We truly believe this is due to our community-wide approach and the incredible involvement and support of all of you, as evidenced by our best-ever 16th Annual Walk & Candlelight Vigil. Thank you, and warm wishes for a happy, healthy New Year!
   MAAV's 16th Annual Walk a Huge Success!
Walk 2011
A record crowd turned out to take steps against violence as part of MAAV's 16th Annual Walk on October 23. Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone was presented with our 1st Annual Advocacy in Action Award and a moving Candlelight Vigil commemorated 28 victims of domestic violence homicide in our state over the past year. Thanks to all of you, the event also raised over $32,000 for MAAV! These funds will support our outreach services for victims of domestic violence and prevention programs with youth. A huge thanks to our 85 sponsors and 52 Team Captains! Congratulations to winning teams, "Hands Off!" (Friends of the Middlesex Fells/Melrose Council on Aging) for Best Team Name and the "UU You Too's" (Melrose Unitarian Universalist Church) for Most Team Members, Most Money Raised and Best Team Attire. Check out more photos from the event and a letter of thanks from the Walk Leadership Team.
S.T.E.P. Grant Awarded to Melrose for Teen Dating Violence Prevention
The Melrose Public Schools, in partnership with MAAV, has been awarded a 3-year federal grant in the amount of $465,000 to address teen dating violence among middle and high school students. The S.T.E.P. Grant (Services, Training, Education and Policies) to Reduce Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Dating Violence and Stalking in Secondary Schools is administered by the Office on Violence Against Women at the US Department of Justice. Additional partners include the Melrose Police Department and Boston Area Rape Crisis Center. The project will build on programs established in the Melrose Public Schools with MAAV over the past 16 years, including the Student Action Board peer leadership program, and training for students, staff and parents. New initiatives include training for coaches and a range of intervention services for students most at risk. MAAV is thrilled and honored to work with the Melrose Public Schools and other partners to better serve the students, parents and community of Melrose.
Melrose Superintendent Joseph Casey, MAAV Executive Director Rebecca Mooney and MAAV Board members Mike Bloom and Anna Bastian announced the grant award at the School Committee meeting on November 15.
New Mentoring Group for 7th Graders Starting Soon- One More Mentor Needed!
Do you remember what it was like to be in 7th grade? Now imagine you'd had a caring, fun, consistent adult that spent time with you, listened to you, and helped you discover your strengths. We currently have 9 terrific volunteers ready to make a 1-year commitment to be there for a student in need, and are looking for one more to complete the group! Our unique program combines a group approach with one-to-one mentoring, starting with group meetings designed to build trust with icebreakers, games, guest speakers and outings. Check out our Fact Sheet or contact Sharon Loveridge, Mentoring Program Coordinator at 781-662-2010. Commit for a year...impact for a lifetime!
Spotlight on the Board: Karen Willis

Karen joined the MAAV Board of Directors in 2010 because she is a domestic violence survivor and wanted to help other women, men, children and families in need. As part of the Annual Walk Leadership Team, Karen heads up online fundraising, motivating volunteers with her creative graphics and ever-popular contests! Karen has also served as a mentor in MAAV's mentoring program. Karen stated that she remains involved with the MAAV Board because she feels she has been able to make a difference in the lives of domestic violence victims. When not volunteering with MAAV, Karen works as a Rehabilitation Clinical Liaison and Physical Therapist Assistant.  Karen feels that as a healthcare provider and domestic violence survivor she brings a unique and personal experience to the MAAV board. We agree, and are grateful for her energy and tremendous dedication to MAAV's mission.
