Greetings!

In the spirit of spring and new beginnings, we present our new logo and new look! Designed by Brenda Adams, we hope the logo conveys both our growth and core mission- bringing the community together to prevent bullying and teen dating violence as well as domestic violence. Check out our newly designed web site too, courtesy of BKJ Productions. We'd love to hear from you, so send us a line and let us know what you think!

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month
SAB 3

Hats off to the MAAV Student Action Board for doing their part to raise awareness about sexual assault. On March 30th the Senior Class at Melrose High School came together for an assembly with speakers from Boston Area Rape Crisis Center and Northeastern University's Mentors in Violence Prevention program. Students learned about what constitutes sexual assault, the prevalence, how it affects victims, and how to stand up by becoming an ally or helping a victim. The video "Every 2 Minutes," made by former SAB members was shown.

The assembly was a wonderful way to kick off Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April, a campaign to educate the public about what sexual assault is and how it can be best prevented.  Sexual assault refers to any forced, coerced or manipulated sexual activity.  The inclusion of coercion in this definition means that fear, age, substances and disability are all possible contributors to someone's inability to consent to sexual activity. While sexual violence is often perceived as rape, the range of actions that are considered sexual assault vary from forced intercourse and sexual contact to sexual harassment and exploitation.

For more information about sexual assault, how you can become an active preventer, or ways to get help, check out the web sites listed under QUICK LINKS on the left.
