Our Website

Greetings! October is both Domestic Violence and Bullying Awareness Month. We believe these issues are related, and both require a community-wide approach to solve. Show your support by participating in MAAV's 15th Annual Walk & Candlelight Vigil on Sunday, and join us as we celebrate 15 years of commitment to the community and to violence prevention!
15th Annual Walk & Candlelight Vigil is Oct. 17!

Walk 2009

Rain or shine, the event begins at the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School, with registration at 3:30 and the Candlelight Vigil at 4:00 pm, followed by a 2-mile Walk around Ell Pond. All are welcome and invited to return to the MVMMS cafeteria for anniversary cake and refreshments!

In addition to raising awareness, the Walk raises funds for MAAV's many outreach & prevention programs. Thanks to our generous sponsors and online fundraisers, we are over half way to our goal of raising $30,000!

Check out our 23 Teams & 37 individuals raising money online or make a donation online directly to MAAV today. Thank you for your support!
Teen Author on Bullying Visits Melrose

"Dorie Witt's Guide to Surviving Bullies" was written by teen author & advocate Brigitte Berman after she herself was a victim of bullying. Brigitte shared her story, read excerpts from her book and answered questions from Melrose teens and adults at MMTV for a program which has already started airing on METV, thanks to Mike Miner. Many thanks to Brigitte for sharing her insights, practical tips and heartfelt words of wisdom. Visit our display throughout October at the Melrose Public Library featuring her book and many others on bullying.

"Dear Lisa" Educates Community on Teen Dating Violence

On Sept. 28, Mr. Tom Santoro shared the story of his daughter's tragic death at the hands of her ex-boyfriend, speaking to 500 students at Melrose High School, and approximately 125 parents, students and community members at an evening presentation at Stoneham Theatre, co-sponsored by the Melrose, Stoneham & Wakefield Alliances Against Violence. At Melrose High School, MAAV's 16-member Student Action Board led follow-up interactive discussion groups with their peers through Wellness classes.
