The Peace Within Massage Therapy Newsletter

AUGUST 2009
Greetings!

September is on it's way!  Kids are heading back to school, Labor day fun times are ahead and the last scramble for summer vacations is winding down.
I hope that the summer went well for all of you and that the cooler weather makes you as happy as it does me.  Even though at the time of this writing - I could just melt - it is hard to think about cooler weather!
OK, it's time for me to brag a little bit here!  My Mom (my inspiration!) has completed her week long bike ride across New York State and is now getting ready to swim across Cayuga Lake (one of the middle finger lakes - maybe a mile or so across).  Isn't she uh-mazing!!  One day I will be just like her! (laughs)

Anyway, hope you are all beating the heat and surviving the lines for school supplies!  See ya soon!
Reflexology is ......
     reflexology
.....an ancient practice related to accupressure techniques.  There are actual hieroglyphic references to forms of foot reflexology in Egypt.  The Native Americans also knew about the relationships between various points on the feet and the internal organs.
The reflexology that I practice is called Integrative Reflexology and is based on 4 different theories.
Structure theory believes that the body's structural allignment, starting at the feet, can affect so many aspects of how the body works.  Zone theory splits the feet up into vertical and horizontal areas that relate to zones located over the entire body.  For instance the toe "zone" is related to the head, neck and shoulders "zone".  Meridians theory is based on the acupressure techniques widely used in Chinese medical practices. Proprioceptor theory realizes that the feet and hands have a multitude of nervous system receptors that communicate with the rest of the body.
Now that all the scientific theory stuff is out of the way - what can reflexology DO for you?  There are many stories about the positive effects that can occur from this treatment.  Some deal with changes in the feet due to changes in behavior.  Such as the the disappearance of a growth on the lung point after a man stopped smoking.  Some deal with painful points being indicators of something going on at that point's organ.  Such as tenderness at the bronchial point relating to an infection in the bronchial tubes.  Others tell the tale of pain receding or being relieved due to stimulation of the corresponding point on the foot, hand or ear.
What reflexology CAN NOT do is diagnose medical problems - you still need to see your doctor for that.

Part 3 of my new series!

In this series, I will attempt to describe some of the common problems that could be helped through massage therapy.  If you are afflicted with any of these, massage could be used on it's own or along with your doctor's administrations.  Just be aware that some of these problems may take some time to achieve results.

TMJ (Temporomandibular Disorder):

Pain located at the joint of the jaw should be treated by both your dentist and your massage therapist.  There are many factors that may contribute to this condition.  The only piece that I will address deals with chronic improper head and body posture that leads to muscular compensation and misalignment of the joint which causes the pain.
  • Many of us work in seated positions, looking at a computer screen.  This changes the way our bodies function, especially if our desks are not set in the correct ergonomic position that is personal for each one of us.
  • I'm not going to go into all the individual muscles and how they behave when overcompensating for postural distortion.  Basically the neck and facial muscles will constantly work to keep the eyes level on a horizontal plane and once they are in a chronic shortened position they start to pull on the jaw in ways that put stress on the discs that allow for smooth movement in that joint.  Just as arthritis starts wearing away at bone smoothness, these discs start losing their functionality and pain results.  Lengthening of the muscles surrounding the jaw can greatly relieve some of this pressure.
  • There are also trigger points that can occur in nearby muscles that may refer to the jaw and feel like the pain is coming from that location.  Therefore the muscles of the neck - particularly the SCM and tapezius muscles - need to be palpated for trigger points and worked to eliminate them.
I hope you find this series informative.  Feel free to e-mail me with questions at: shawn@thepeacewithinmassage.com.
I look forward to seeing you soon!
