The Peace Within Massage Therapy Newsletter

MAY 2009
Greetings!

Ahh - May (allready)!!!!  This month is probably my most favorite.  Not just because I get to celebrate my birthday AND my wedding anniversary, but the weather is wonderful and it urges me to get outside much more often.  (My poor husband - he has to work extra hard this month.)  Getting outside does so many good things for us.  We exercise more, we get our vitamin D dosage, we get to breathe in nature and enjoy all it has to offer.  There is something about being entrenched in nature that renews the spirit and the soul - don't you think?

Not that this endears me to May, but this is when I start to see more injuries due to "weekend warrior madness".  We all get over exuberant when starting out on a new fitness venture, so I want to play Mom here for a bit:  Pay attention to your body and pace yourself.  Realize that you need to give your body time to adjust - even though it may feel just fine at the moment.  It is far better to take precautions than to have to heal after pushing yourself too hard.  That is not to say that you shouldn't give your best - just find the balance!!

Taking my Mom hat back off, just get out there and enjoy the best in Carolina's weather!  Have fun!
Healthy Food

Now, I am most certainly not an expert in nutrition, but I make it a point to learn what is best to put in my body to nourish it.  There have been a few "hot" trends recently that have become entrenched in the way we all think about food.  I would like to comment briefly on both of them:

1.  Organic - Just because the pasta you are eating is organic and whole wheat doesn't mean that you can eat loads of it.  It is still pasta and a carbohydrate!  The same goes for those prepackaged "organic" meals.  Read labels - many are still full of sugar, salt and other unhealthy ingredients.  That being said - I still believe that organic is better than the chemically laden foods that we have been fed for the last few decades.

2.  Local foods - I can't find too much wrong with this movement as long as I know how the food is processed.  I worry that unsafe practices will start hiding behind the "local" label, just as everyone started jumping onto the "organic" or "natural" wagon.  At this point in time, I think this movement is still worth following.  Support local farmers, help the environment and eat healthy.

I have started receiving e-mails again from our local Tailgate market, so they are open - go out and get yourself some GOOD food!  website:  www.charlottetailgatemarket.com

Stress Relief through Stretching (Part 7)
 neck pain
This may be my last submission in this series.  I am running out of parts to stretch!!  Please feel free to ask me about stretching anytime!

Upper leg - Quads

Note:  Please be careful of your knees!
The quadracept muscles of the front leg are the muscles that move the lower leg to the straight position.  Care must be taken to never stretch to a point of causing pain in the knee.  Keep in control of your stretch at all times.

Sitting Quad stretch:

  • Sit with your right leg bent with your right heel just outside your right hip.  Your left leg is bent with the sole of your left foot next to the upper right leg.  You can also have the left leg straight out in front.
  • The right foot should be extended back with the ankle flexed (toes pointed).  If the ankle is too tight, move your foot just enough to the side to lesson the tension.  Do NOT let the foot flare out to the side!  This will put undo stress on the inside of the knee.
  • Slowly lean back until you feel an easy stretch.  You may not even need to lean back to start feeling the stretch.  Use your hands for support behind you.  The knee should stay on the floor.
  • Hold for ten seconds and switch sides.

Standing Quad stretch:

  • Find a wall or something to steady your balance.
  • Hold the top of your right foot with your left hand.  You can use a towel or a strap if you can not reach it.  Just make sure you use the opposite hand for each foot.  This position puts less stress on the knee as opposed to using the same side hand and foot.
  • Gently pull heel towards your buttocks and hold for 10 to 20 seconds.  Then switch sides.
  • Note: this can also be done while laying on your stomach.

Enjoy your stretches and do them often!!

I look forward to seeing you soon!
