The Peace Within Massage Therapy Newsletter

MARCH 2009
Greetings!

Isn't March the most interesting month?  We get all kinds of weather during it!   Variety can be a good thing!  It can teach us how to respond to differing situations and can offer new insights that we may never have thought of before!  (I'm such a philosopher - lol)

I really just wanted to report on my first meditation session here, so I guess I should do that!  We had a wide range of practice levels and styles which made for an amazing first session.  I kept the actual "sit" time to about 20 minutes, but we managed to fill an hour with interesting conversation.  I encourage anyone who is interested to join us.  The group meets every Saturday morning at 9:00 at my studio.  The sessions are free and open to any who want to come (as long as I have the room).  Feel free to e-mail me with any questions you may have: slhammond@earthlink.net

Keep learning new things and enjoy moments of peace!
New Activities

With the better weather comes more physical activities.  (At least for most!!  Some of us manage to stay active all year long - my hat is off to you!)  Now is the time to pay attention to your body and listen to it when it says it has had enough.

Many of you may begin Spring gardening soon.  This is when I start to see more low back pain issues crop up.  Remember to stretch now and then while you are working.  Also, make sure your project isn't too big for the time you have available.  I know from experience that we ignore our bodies and push too hard to finish a large project that is running out of time!  Take time to plan your project (preferably before it begins :-)) including the time and materials you think it will take.  I generally add on extra time - because you know that even the best planning doesn't foresee everything!

I'm sure that I shouldn't have to tell you all this - but just as a reminder....      Lift from your legs!!!!

Enjoy the good weather, when we have it!
Stress Relief through Stretching (Part 5)
 neck pain
As always I welcome ideas for this article. Let me know if you have an area that you would like addressed soon, and I will put that in the next issue.

Low back (again):

One easy stretch to do while you are working at your spring project is as follows:
  • The intent of this one is to stretch the Front of the body, which if too shortened, can cause the low back to hurt.  Our bodies need to be in balance to work efficiently.
  • Start with a centered, grounded stance.
  • Place both palms, with fingertips pointing straight down, on your lower back - preferably on the top of your pelvis.
  • Lift your shoulders up towards your ears and bend your head back to rest on shoulders.  This is not a neck stretch - it is just a good place to rest your head and protect your neck.
  • Slowly, and with the intent of stretching the Front of the body, bend backwards.
  • Keep your shoulders up and head resting there.
  • Please do not over do this one - just go to a good stretch point and hold for a few seconds

Supported back arches also help to stretch the front of the body:

  • This is best done over a yoga ball, but a comfortable foot stool could work as well.
  • Sit on your yoga ball and roll it forward allowing the spine to connect with the ball until it is completely supported. (basically lower your back onto the yoga ball)
  • Allow yours arms to fall out to the sides.
  • Enjoy the supported stretch - feels great!

Enjoy your stretches!!! Until next time....

I look forward to seeing you soon!
