Greetings!
Now that the kids are back in school, the traffic has picked up and the summer fun is over, don't neglect yourself (or your friends) in the day to day grind. Take time to enjoy the things that make you happy, take time for some relaxation and take time to connect with those you love.
Speaking of friends, remember that I have a referral program where anyone referred to me will get 10% off their first massage. Even better, once your friend gets their massage, you get a 10% discount on your next massage. I have struggled with rewarding my package plan clients and I think I have finally have come up with a great solution. Anyone who has purchased a package plan from me will get extra time on their next massage instead of trying to keep track of a discount. See you soon!

Friendships

I have been thinking a lot recently about friends and friendship. My recent family reunion seemed to bring it up. Now you may say that family is different from friends, but from what I observed during this reunion, I don't think you can always separate the two.
My mom grew up with a very large family. It was made so by having all of her aunts, uncles and cousins living close by. They all grew up together and had some wonderful stories to tell. I found myself feeling envious over this bond that mom's generation had with each other. In my generation, my cousins are spread across the country and we do not see each other as often as I would like.
Anyway, friends, be them family members or otherwise, should be cherished. Life's hustle and bustle can sometimes make that hard to see. Here's a poem about friendship that I particularly like:
A Friend's Prayer © Jill Wolf
May my friendships always be The most important thing to me; With special friends I feel I'm blessed, So let me give my very best. I want to do much more than share The hopes and plans of friends who care; I'll try all that a friend can do To make their secret dreams come true. Let me use my heart to see, To realise what friends can be, And make no judgements from afar, But love my friends the way they are.

Emergency Preparation When I graduated from college, my first job was doing graphic design for a construction litigation firm whose motto was, "Proper prior planning prevents piss poor performance." I never really liked that motto, still don't, but I mention it because it is so very true. I found this list of essential things to have on hand in case of an emergency. (The notes in parenthesis are my comments)
- Flashlights and several sets of batteries for each member of the family.
- Portable radio and batteries.
- Drinking Water. A supply of one gallon per person, per day for a minimum of three days.
- Non-perishable Food. A two-week supply is best. (This means things in cans - oh boy!)
- Special dietary foods.
- Non-electric can opener.
- Prescription medications. Always keep a two-week supply on hand.
- Infant supplies that include sterile water, diapers, ready formula, bottles, etc. (This one goes for pet supplies for those of us with furry children)
- Mosquito repellent.
- First aid kit including a first aid book, bandages, antiseptic, tape, compresses, aspirin and nonaspirin pain reliever, antidiarrhea medication and antacid.
- Distress flag and/or whistle.
- Toilet paper, paper towels and pre-moistened towelettes.
- Camera and film. (I didn't get the reason for this one right away, but you will need to document damages for your insurance claims. Also make sure your battery is fresh, or that you have extras.)
- Coolers. One to keep food and another to transport ice.
- Plastic tarp, roofing paper, nails, tools, etc.
- Plastic trash bags.
- Clean-up supplies including a mop, buckets, towels, disinfectant, etc.
- Water purification kit. Tablets, plain chlorine and iodine.
For more information on being prepared for a hurricane go to this link:
With the hurricane season upon us it's not a bad idea to get these things ready. I know that I have put off getting my items together, but the recent flooding made me wake up and smell the coffee. So, work with me and prepare yourselves. The worst thing that could happen is you end up having extra stuff lying around the house! | |
