WOMEN IN SCIENCE: Men Still Outnumber Women
In all scientific fields of study except biological sciences men continue to outnumber women. The fields of physical sciences and computer sciences and engineering show the highest gender disparity. Why does this underrepresentation matter?
Fewer female graduates in scientific higher education translate into fewer women working in scientific research and occupations. For example, at Rutgers, women are only 19.5 percent of tenured and tenure-track science faculty. Click here for the complete fact sheet on WOMEN IN SCIENCE.
Our series of Women's Leadership Fact Sheets is designed to increase awareness of women's current progress and underrepresentation. Click here to see our complete series of fifteen fact sheets.

Join Us for a Conversation on
WOMEN and HEALTH
Dázon Dixon Diallo, Founder and President of Sister Love, the first women's HIV/AIDS organization in the southwestern US, will join Terry McGovern, Program Officer of the Ford Foundation, in a conversation with IWL Director Alison R. Bernstein.
During her time at the Atlanta Feminist Women's Health Center, Dázon Dixon Diallo witnessed the harmful effects of poverty and a lack of education on women's sexual health. Unable to sit idly by, she collaborated with other women to found SisterLove, Inc. Today Dázon is nationally known as an outspoken educator and advocate for women's sexual health. Join us for a stimulating and informative conversation.

NEW RESEARCH on IWL Graduates in Health Professions
The Institute for Women's Leadership (IWL) has begun a study of graduates of its successful Leadership Scholars Certificate Program for Rutgers undergraduate students. With a $20,000 gift from the J. Seward Johnson Sr. 1963 Charitable Trust, the IWL is examining the continuing effects of this experience on its 168 alumnae. This research is the first phase of a longitudinal study to help us learn about aspiring young leaders of the "millennial generation" working in health fields.
According to Dr. Mary K. Trigg, director of the Leadership Scholars Program and Associate Professor of Women's and Gender Studies, "We are eager to learn from our graduates about their life experiences in the first ten years after college. Two key questions we ask are: How does participation in our leadership scholars program influence career and life decisions after college? and What are the specific challenges and accomplishments of young women leaders pursuing careers in health care and health policy?"
Dr. Arielle Rotramel, a recent graduate of the Women's and Gender Studies PhD program, is the project director working with Dr. Trigg on this new research initiative. |

Reflecting on this experience, Leslie said, "I learned that I am very committed to activism. I always knew that but now I know it even more. This is what I want to do in life...If you are passionate about something, you have to just go for it, to do it!"
