2011 Angelides Lecture:
Isabel Wilkerson Egages a Rapt Audience
Isabel Wilkerson

Addressing a diverse audience of 250 people at the Douglass Campus Center, Isabel Wilkerson discussed her award-winning book The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration. Her outstanding lecture on October 24 highlighted vivid details from her book's compelling stories of three African-American families who migrated from the South to the North and West. Special thanks to Isabel Wilkerson for an unforgettable evening and to Susan and Michael Angelides for endowing this annual lecture series. Stay tuned for information about next year's 2012 Angelides Lecture.

Updated Fact Sheet on Women and the Nobel Prize
Alison R. Bernstein

Alison Bernstein, director, Institute for Women's Leadership notes, "The announcement of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize joint award to three women -- Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf; Liberian Leymah Gbowee; and Tawakkul Karman of Yemen -- puts the spotlight on the important perspectives women bring to leadership for social justice. We applaud the courageous work of these women in their non-violent struggle for peace in the region. The IWL's updated fact sheet on Women and the Nobel Prize reminds us that recognition for women's contributions in Nobel Prize fields has been slow.  Five percent (43) of the 826 individual Nobel Prize winners have been women.  Although women have won in all six Nobel Prize fields, it is interesting to note that Peace, with 15, has the most women laureates. Involving women peacemakers is critical to making a just and lasting peace. The IWL joins the UN and women's organizations worldwide in demanding that women have equal participation in decision-making."
