Of the 197 self-governing countries in the world, 22 (11.2 percent) have women heads of state or government in the form of a president or prime minister.  The Institute publishes a series of fact sheets to increase awareness of women's progress and underrepresentation in leadership.  Click here for the full Fact Sheet on Women Heads of State.

Transforming Lives Interview and Film Project

This year five Leadership Scholars interviewed women leaders and produced short documentary films about their lives.  Hera Mir produced "Iran:  The Women's Voice, An Interview with Mahnaz Afkhami." Ms. Afkhami  is the Founder of Women's Learning Partnership and a leader in the women's rights movement.  She was exiled from Iran in 1978 after the Revolution.

Hera Mir comments:

"She had an immigrant experience that I felt was similar to mine.  That's what really inspired me and also because she came from a Muslim context.  So I thought she would be someone that I would look up to...I learned a lot about the politics of Iran and what it means to speak up and how to have your words  heard and why that's important."  Click here to see Mir's documentary on Mahnas Afkhami.

Congratulations to our 2011 graduating class of 20 IWL Leadership Scholars.  They join our growing alumnae group of accomplished young leaders, now 167 strong!  Here are some "reflections on leadership learning" shared at our graduation celebration on May 13.

Leora Cohen

Leora Cohen is a 2011 graduate from the Rutgers School or Arts and Sciences with a major in political science and a minor in women's and gender studies.  She looks forward to starting work this summer in the office of Congressman Steve Rothman in Washington DC.

"Throughout the IWL program there were many opportunities to stand up and be a leader, whether it was the planning, execution and completion of our social action projects or other events both on and off the college campus. While the IWL program was academically intense and rigorous, what I found truly remarkable and unique is that IWL allowed us to take the knowledge we gained in the classroom and put it into practice..."  Click here for Leora's full speech.

Daphney Dupervil is a 2011 graduate of the IWL Leadership Scholars Program.  She is a Douglass student who graduated from the School of Arts and Sciences and the Bloustein School of Public Health in May.

"For some, the classroom is the end of their education, but for me and the women within the IWL it is only a small stepping stone pushing us forward into all communities. For me applying to the IWL gave me an opportunity that no term bill could reflect, it taught me lessons, made me cry, but most importantly it began to shape me. . ."
