New IWL Women's Leadership Fact Sheet on NJ Banking

In the latest in its series of fact sheets on women in leadership and decision making, IWL focused on women's leadership in New Jersey banking.   Data collected on 118 banks belonging to the New Jersey Bankers Association reveal the underrepresentation of women at the top.  Women are 4.2 per cent of CEOs.  Special appreciation to our graduate assistants Anel Mendez Velazquez  and Laura Lovin for their research for this fact sheet.  Click here for the complete Women's Leadership Fact Sheet on Women in Banking in New Jersey.

Inked: An Interview with Alison Bechdel
Alison Bechdel

Alison Bechdel, a critically acclaimed comic artist and author, is one of five women leaders filmed this year by IWL Leadership Scholars as part of the Transforming Lives project conducted in partnership with Writers House Rutgers.  Leadership Scholar Mimi Zander interviewed Alison at her home in Vermont and produced a short documentary called, "Inked:  An Interview with Alison Bechdel."  In the film, Alison reflects on her life and work:

"I grew up in the early 60's.  I started noticing an incredible sexist world where women were Beaver Cleavers' mother... It was just not something I related to at all..."  Click here to view the documentary.

Mimi Zander: Rutgers Student, Award-Winning Filmmaker
Mimi Zander

Mimi Zander is a Rutgers University senior, IWL Leadership Scholar and awarding-winning filmmaker.  She is majoring in English with a triple minor in women's and gender studies, anthropology and Spanish.  For her social action project she interviewed Alison Bechdel and produced an 8-minute documentary film.

"I chose to tell Alison's story because I am eternally fascinated with graphic novels and comics.  I think they have a power that other works don't have." To view Mimi Zander's statement, click here and select the Filmmaker's Statement tab under the Feature Video window.

Mimi's film won two awards:  the Margery Somers Foster Undergraduate Multimedia Award (The Margery Somers Foster Center, Rutgers Libraries) and Composing in New Media Prize (Department of English, award underwritten by Writers House).  Congratulations!

IWL Alumna in Focus
Abigail Hamilton
Abigail Hamilton, Rutgers Class of 2001

Following her time as an IWL Leadership Scholar, Abigail Hamilton received her Masters and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Loyola College in Maryland.  She has devoted the majority of her training and clinical experience to working with late adolescents and early adults.  Now running her own private practice and enjoying being a new mother, Abigail wrote:

"My experience in IWL was formational.  I believe it provided a space in which to learn professionalism, poise, and public speaking which were invaluable later for interviews and presenting at conferences.  As much as I credit IWL for helping me in my professional life, I cannot discount its impact on decisions I have made in my personal life. . . ."
