Investing in Women's Leadership
The J. Seward Johnson Sr. 1963 Charitable Trust has made a gift of $10,000 to support internship placements during the summer and the academic year for students involved in the IWL. The Trust's investment will help undergraduate students bridge classroom learning with community-based learning to deepen understanding of leadership for social change. Girls Ready 2 Learn
| | Melanie Plasencia, IWL Leadership Scholar |
Inspired by her internship at Casa de Don Pedro in Newark, IWL Leadership Scholar Melanie Plasencia created a 10-week mentoring program for Latina girls at La Casa de Don Pedro's afterschool program. As she was envisioning Girls Ready 2 Learn as her social action project, Melanie wrote:
"I am a Latina woman myself and hope to share with the girls my own experiences. I know that I will be able to relate to the girls on a more personal level because we come from the same types of family and demographic area. I also have experience mentoring young students in the New Brunswick area....But most important, my biggest qualification is my passion for educating and spreading awareness among a population that is so dear to my heart."
