When Students Ask the Questions:
Transforming Lives Documentary Film Project

College Women are inspired by accomplished women leaders.  As part of the curriculum, our IWL Leadership Scholars are required to meet and interview a dynamic women leader.  Students want to know the story behind the story:

"As a child, what did you imagine being?"

"What do you wish you would have known when you were twenty years old, my age?"

"How was college for you?"

"Do you feel you found a balance between work and life?.... "

These conversations have a strong influence on the young women, often helping them to see new possibilities for their own lives and leadership.

In order to give more access to these thoughtful and empowering interviews, Sasha Taner, IWL Associate Director of Leadership Programs and Research, has developed a film component to the interview opportunities.  The Transforming Lives Documentary Film Project, conducted in partnership with Writers House, Rutgers University Department of English, enables selected Leadership Scholars to take a documentary film course and produce short films about the woman leaders they interview.

IWL Leadership Scholar Alumnae Update

Lindsey C. Seltzer, a Douglass College graduate and IWL Leadership Scholar '08, was recently promoted to Account Executive at GMMB, a political consulting firm in Washington, D.C.  As part of her role, she is working on several big Senate races including Barbara Boxer's re-election in California.  Lindsey writes:  " I think back often to my time with the Institute for Women's Leadership and I feel like the work that I did, the women who mentored me and the friends I learned from continue to influence and inform everything I do here. As busy as I am and as all-consuming as the work gets, the IWL truly prepared me in ways I never imagined for this job. Whether I'm working with clients, contributing on a proposal, participating in a high level meeting, reading and thinking critically, or simply drafting client emails, taking calls, and moving through the world as a professional - so much of what I learned through my IWL seminars, projects and internships has been crucial in making the transition from college to working life. I'm thrilled to be working on these important campaigns in such an exciting election year and attribute much of my success to my IWL experiences."

Lindsey continues to be passionate about "direct action" work and is especially enjoying getting experience in broadcast production as part of her job.  We look forward to hearing more from Lindsey as she continues her leadership adventures both as a community volunteer and as a professional in political consulting.  To learn more about the IWL Leadership Scholars Program
