HOT Selected by FIT for Charity
| |
The Financial Industry in Tokyo (FIT) For Charity was established in 2005 and has been raising money for non-profit community organizations which serve important needs, but may have only limited fund-raising capabilities.
After a thorough review by the FIT for Charity 2010 Organizing Committee, Hands On Tokyo has been selected as one of the ten organizations chosen to receive funding. Because all members of this committee are volunteers and all props for the FIT event are donated by companies and their employees, over 90% of the donations and participation fees go to the selected ten organizations.
 | | 10km run start |
This year, the sixth annual FIT For Charity Run took place on Sunday, November 7 at Tokyo's National Kasumigaoka Stadium. They set new records in participation with 6,716 individuals from 101 financial services and related foreign and domestic organizations. Hands On Tokyo board members and staff also participated in the event.
At the awards ceremony, Hands On Tokyo Board Chair, D. Steven Lin, had the privilege of handing an award to Bank of America Merrill Lynch, the top 2nd fundraising organization.
 | | Mr. Jonathan Field & HOT staff |
We would like to thank the many organizations and volunteers who helped to get Hands On Tokyo involved in this event. Special thanks go to all the participants, supporters, and donors for the 2010 FIT for Charity Run. We'd also like to thank Jonathan Field from MGPA, the Hands On Tokyo point of contact to the FIT committee.

Corporate Highlight: CLIFFORD CHANCE
| |
(Written by Clifford Chance)
Clifford Chance is one of the world's leading law firms, with 29 offices in 20 countries and some 3,200 legal advisers. The Tokyo office provides a comprehensive Japanese and multi-jurisdictional legal service, combining the strength of a worldwide network with local expertise.
For transactions that require the expertise of both Japanese and foreign lawyers, Clifford Chance operates as a single team under the leadership of experienced partners, providing clients with a seamless service and comprehensively addressing all their legal needs, whether Japanese or international. In addition to the legal services it offers, Clifford Chance undertakes a wide range of corporate responsibility activities founded on a desire at both a global and a local level to 'do the right thing'. The Clifford Chance Foundation was created in 2008. Its primary goal is to create an umbrella for all of the firm's 'giving' globally and help the firm 'give' more; thereby creating a more focused and co-ordinated platform for CR-related activities around: access to justice; access to education; and access to finance.
The Foundation is funded with approximately £1 million per annum. Each year, one third of the Foundation's funds is allocated amongst individual offices to spend on local initiatives within the three themes. Clifford Chance was introduced to Hands on Tokyo in January this year when members of HOT came to its offices and provided an exciting and informative presentation. HOT helped members of the Tokyo office to grasp the charitable activity needs in Japan and gave them ideas on how to get actively involved in HOT's various events. The staff of the Tokyo office were very impressed by the organisation and voted to recognise the local charity by awarding the Tokyo office's allocation of Foundation funds to HOT.
Since being introduced to HOT, the Tokyo office has been enthusiastic about giving back to the community as part of its corporate responsibility goals through HOT. The Tokyo office is committed to participating in future volunteer events with HOT.

On Friday, November 19th, BCCJ held its third annual British Business Awards at the Conrad Tokyo Hotel. A total of five awards were handed out: Corporate Excellence Award, Corporate Innovation Award, Best Entrepreneur Award, Best Local CSR Initiative Award, and Special Award.
Hands On Tokyo received the Special Award in recognition of our efforts to make a positive impact in society, and for our potential for future development and growth. In response to many requests for weekday projects, we have decided to include the 3R Project on our list of ongoing programs. 3R stands for Reuse, Reduce and Recycle.
For this project, HOT receives half-used bottles of amenities (shampoo, conditioner, body soap, and body lotion) from first-class hotels in Tokyo. The volunteers empty its contents into PET bottles and put on a label which they design. The final products are delivered to our partners in need for daily necessities.
The 3R Project will be held at least four times a month at the Hands On Tokyo office. If you are interested in volunteering for a couple of hours on weekdays, we would like to invite you to sign up through the website.
Thank you for all your support and help. We really look forward to volunteering with you soon. |

Taste For Volunteering 2011 |
Hands On Tokyo is very honored that we can hold our fourth annual fundraising event, Taste For Volunteering, on Friday, February 4th at The Capitol Hotel Tokyu (Tameike Sanno), which opened this past October. This year's event theme will be "Smile."
We would like to invite you to this event to enjoy delightful dishes and taste exquisite wines while participating in an auction. Our auction has many unique items, and we have no doubt that this will be a night to remember. Funds raised through our auction, together with other generous donations and sponsorships throughout the year, enable us to continue to grow and provide a much-needed service to the Tokyo community.
We will be sending out the Taste For Volunteering invitations soon. For more information, please visit www.handsontokyo.org . |

In Memory of Fred Harris
|
This month our community lost one of our most dedicated community leaders. Fred Harris, Chairman of The Design Studio K.K. and Advisory Board Member of Hands On Tokyo, passed away on November 1. Throughout his life, Fred always made time to give back to the community. He created a foundation to support young Vietnamese artists, regularly hosted US service men for Thanksgiving dinner, played a leading role at the highest levels to improve Japan and US relations/cross cultural understanding, donated his time and artwork to support various causes, and participated in countless volunteer activities, among so many other examples of his community leadership. Fred was one of HOT's earliest supporters, designed our original logo, and lent his credibility and insights when HOT was just a dream. He was an inspiration to so many and we will miss him dearly. Our thoughts are with his wife and his large network of friends during this difficult time.
