Fujisawa Beach Clean Up

On Sunday, April 18, about forty teens from Sacred Heart, St. Mary's, and the American School in Japan participated in the Fujisawa Beach Clean Up.

The Teen Advisory Board organized this event so that students from different schools, nationalities and backgrounds can make a difference in our community. Alex Heideman, vice president of the Teen Advisory Board said, "It was great to see so many students working hard, trying to better the community with something as simple as picking up trash. As a group, we were able to gather about 8 bags of garbage off the beach. After the clean up, all of the students were very satisfied with their participation and eager to head back to the Soleil Provence for some lunch." These teens have made significant progress in our community by making volunteerism more accessible to people of all ages, and making it look so effortless and fun! Hands On Tokyo is honored to have such a wonderful and motivated Teen Advisory Board and teen volunteers.
Teen Advisory Board Inteview

The Teen Advisory Board is part of Hands On Tokyo, and is made up of 10 students from several international schools. These students volunteer to help advertise and engage students in various volunteer activities through Hands On Tokyo. With a few members graduating, they will be interviewing for new members.

If you are interested in making a difference with this group of talented teens, please contact Jonathan Higa (ski_ski_jonathan@hotmail.com) or Alexander Heideman (alexander_heideman@mac.com) as soon as possible. In your e-mail, please include your name, school name, grade, e-mail, and phone number. The interviews end on Friday, May 28.

Harvard Club Global Day of Service

During April, Harvard's Global Month of Service, alumni all around the world gather in the common cause of providing service to others.  Whether it's tutoring children, cleaning a riverbank, painting a mural, working in a food pantry, or a host of other projects, Harvard Clubs and Shared Interest Groups choose a day during the month of April when they will do good work in their community while connecting for informal networking purposes.

On Friday, April 9, a total of twelve members from the Harvard Club of Japan gathered at the Hands On Tokyo Office to make rice balls for the homeless living along the Sumida River. While socializing and getting to know each other, they had made 500 rice balls by the end of the day.
Most participants had never made rice balls so the first few were shaped oddly, but they mastered rice ball making very quickly. Frank, a Harvard Alumni originally from Hawaii, commented that he had made Spam Musubi back home, but never rice balls. All the participants had fun and left with a great sense of accomplishment. A couple members returned two weeks later to participate in the project again.

The SAP Japan Event
On Saturday, April 24, SAP Japan held a computer training class at their Sankei office for 11 children living at Wakabaryo Children's Home. SAP Japan offered to donate 8 PCs to Wakabaryo, but they took the extra step to also offer computer lessons using the computers Wakabaryo will receive. SAP Japan created a PC Donation Project Team consisting up of nine members, and recruited an additional nine volunteers from their staff to participate in the event. The Executive Sponsor of the SAP Japan Event and president of SAP Japan, Mr. Garrett Ilg, also participated to support this project.

SAP JapanDuring the two-hour event, the children took pictures of the magnificent view from the SAP Japan office as well as the furniture and decoration in the waiting area. Then, the children were instructed on how to upload pictures onto the computer and apply a digital frame using Microsoft Word. The children took many pictures and worked on the computer diligently. During the 15-minute snack time, SAP Japan staff and the children had time to socialize with each other more casually. At the end of the event, each child went home with their best artwork printed on photo paper and a group photo taken right after snack time.

All SAP Japan staff members were encouraged by participating in this event and said they are looking forward to participating in another activity. One SAP Japan volunteer stated, "After the children left, I somewhat felt like a different person, inspired by new perspectives. Participation in volunteer activities needs to be voluntary, but as a consultant who deals with many customers, I think it is important to engage in such activities. It gave me the opportunity to step away from my busy work routine and a chance to self-reflect."

The children really enjoyed themselves and benefitted from this event as well. One child spoke at the end, "...This company is in Japan, but once inside, it feels like another country. I have never been to a place like this. This opportunity has given me a dream that someday, I would like to work in a company like this. Thank you for hosting this event and teaching us today. We rarely have opportunities to take pictures at the home and print them out. I had so much fun today. Thank you."
Hands On Tokyo is honored to be able to partner with companies such as SAP Japan who is taking a more hands-on approach to delivering community-based programs. We look forward to creating and developing more programs to impact lives in Tokyo.
