Volunteer Spotlight: Hiroko Blume
|
Helping children has been a motivating factor for Hiroko Blume for the past 10 years. She was drawn to volunteering when she saw the plight of children in Afghanistan on television. She began collecting and sending used clothing to the country, taking care to separate out culturally inappropriate items and making sure all clothing was clean and properly folded. Her effort has continued for 10 years. Hiroko began volunteering with Hands On Tokyo at the 2008 Day of Service, helping to coordinate the playground renovation at the Wakabaryo Children's Home. In subsequent months, she continued to volunteer at Wakabaryo and donated toys and craft items for the children. HOT staff quickly recognized her enthusiasm and attention to detail and asked her to become a project coordinator for 2009. Hiroko was born and raised in Chiba, and studied in the United States as a young woman. Prior to marrying, she worked for Brazilian and Canadian enterprises in Tokyo. She is an accomplished teacher of flower-arranging, both Western-style and Ikebana, and also kimono kitsuke (the art of dressing in kimono), something most Japanese women can no longer do for themselves. Tokyo American Club members know Hiroko well as she has taught western-style flower arranging there for the last 14 years. Hiroko's husband is originally from the U.K., but has lived in Japan for 25 years. The couple has a teenage daughter in boarding school in England and a son at ASIJ middle school. Hiroko is keen to instill the spirit of volunteering in both children. Each have volunteered with their mother at Wakabaryo, and Hiroko is hopeful that through her IB studies her daughter will have the experience of community work to help her better understand her own place in society, the benefits she has enjoyed, and how she can give back. Now that her children are growing up, Hiroko is enthusiastic about dedicating more time to community service. She welcomed the opportunity to be a project coordinator for HOT, and we are confident the children at Wakabaryo and the HOT volunteers will appreciate her heartfelt commitment to giving back to the community.

Sponsor Spotlight: Merrill Lynch Japan Securities Co., Ltd.
|
Throughout the world Merrill Lynch is known for its long-standing commitment to corporate philanthropy. As a global company built on local relationships, the firm believes the surest path to economic prosperity is providing people of all backgrounds the opportunities and fundamental skills needed to unlock and realize their potential. Its philanthropic activities are concentrated on helping underserved communities gain access to programs and economic support that enable them to improve their lives. Merrill Lynch searches for projects that are innovative, advance a global cause, tap the best non-profit partners, involve Merrill Lynch volunteers, transcend cultural sensitivities, and adhere to best practices. In Japan, most of the firm's giving centers on child and family welfare, civic causes, environmental safety, and the arts. In recognition of its commitment to society, Merrill Lynch is the three-time recipient of Japan's highest national honor to firms that support society, the Konju Hosho (or Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon). No other firm, domestic or foreign, has achieved this milestone. Since Merrill Lynch became a top-tier sponsor of Hands on Tokyo in September 2008, the HOT-Merrill Lynch partnership has become a model for HOT's work with all of our corporate sponsors. Merrill Lynch staffers are frequent volunteers at HOT's regular projects, and 33 Merrill Lynch employees participated in several different projects on the October Day of Service. Kaori Yamamoto, a Merrill Lynch employee, had this to say about her experience with her 5-year old daughter at the autumn festival at the senior home. "It was a wonderful event, offering creative and enjoyable activities everyone can take part in, including making perches for feeding birds, gardening, and bead accessory-making. It was a day of learning for us. We enjoyed as much as the people we were visiting. When it was time to say goodbye, they told us to come back. Then, my daughter, who looked a bit tired from her first volunteering experience, replied, 'I will definitely be back!'" Alan Leigh, chairperson of Merrill Lynch's Philanthropy Committee, says, "We feel that HOT offers a full range of rewarding, impactful activities for our people who wish to volunteer in Japan. While the firm itself commits quite a bit of financial support to the local community, we want to go the next step by offering our associates ways to 'get their hands dirty' benefiting the people of Japan." The Merrill Lynch committee regularly publicizes HOT's programs internally and is working with HOT staff to organize a panel discussion by HOT partners so employees can hear first-hand what a difference their volunteer efforts make. HOT has also benefited greatly from the wealth of experience the Merrill Lynch Philanthropy Committee have in the Japanese corporate philanthropy community. Thanks to an introduction from the firm to the University of Tsukuba Affiliated School for the Blind, in April HOT will launch a new project with the high school's English Conversation Club. HOT's current English conversation for the blind project is one of our most popular, so we are excited to be able to offer many more volunteers an opportunity to participate in this rewarding activity. To Merrill Lynch and all of its employees, we say a sincere thank you for your leadership in community service and for your whole-hearted support of HOT. We look forward to continuing to draw on your wisdom and experience as we grow and deepen our partnership. |

Chairman's Message
|
To All Our Friends and Supporters,
We are in the midst of a deep recession and its impact can be seen vividly throughout our community. Your generosity in terms of volunteer hours and/or financial support is critical and especially meaningful in this time of increasing need.
In our first two years, your support enabled us to give back over 3,500 volunteer hours to the Tokyo community, hire two staff members, grow to 7 ongoing programs with 4 NPO partners, and increase our registered volunteer base to over 700. To provide vital support to our local community during these difficult times, in 2009 Hands On Tokyo aims to add more staff, expand our NPO partnerships, grow our program menu, and increase our number of registered volunteers.
We are grateful for your generosity and continued support of Hands On Tokyo's mission to match Japanese and foreign volunteers in meaningful volunteer service with NPOs and to accelerate the growth of volunteerism in Japan.
