 Candy Mania

Halloween is approaching and all that irresistible candy is lurking at every corner!  It is said that the average American consumes about 24 pounds of candy each year!  If you think you're being smart by only snacking on the fun-sized candy,  think again!  You are likely to eat more calories from those little candies than if you were to eat one candy bar.

Men's Health Magazine recently reported that three miniature Reese's Peanut Butter Cups contain more sugar than a glazed doughnut.  Half a pack of Skittles has more sugar than a scoop of Haagen-Dazs Cookies & Cream Ice Cream and nine Twizzlers carry as many calories as a Wendy's Double Stack Burger (360 calories).

Here are some helpful tips to help you avoid over indulging in that tempting Halloween candy this year:

  • Don't buy candy you like.  Search the shelves for the candy that you are least likely to snack on.  Once Halloween night is over, it will be much easier to toss the leftover candy in the trash since it isn't your favorite.
  • Keep Halloween to one day.  Halloween is a special occasion and it is okay to have special occasion treats.  Just remember that Halloween is October 31st, not the entire month of October or the first week of November.  Enjoy a few treats on Halloween and move on.
  • Out of sight, out of mind....well, maybe not always out of mind.  It is much easier to grab a few pieces of candy when you are passing the candy bowl numerous times a day.  Instead of tempting yourself, wrap the candy up and put it away so it is more difficult to mindlessly eat.
  • Chew gum.  This is especially helpful when you are helping your child sort through their candy.  If you are chewing a piece of gum and candy is around, you are less likely to chew on the high calorie candies.  The sugar in the gum may even help curb your sugar craving.
