Figs
Figs - the real forbidden fruit. Figs were forbidden in ancient times due to their aphrodisiac qualities and their appearance. Today figs are not one of the more popular fruits but they can typically be seen on most grocery store shelves during the summer months.
Figs may be purchased either fresh or dried. Fresh figs have a short shelf life, so eat them within days of purchase. Figs are rich in fiber and iron. Most of the fiber is soluble, which helps prevent against heart disease. Figs are full of minerals, B vitamins, folate and lutein which aids in vision. They also contain omega-3 fatty acids which are associated with healthy heart and brain function. The sterol content of figs can help lower blood cholesterol. Dried figs are a good source of potassium and calcium, but should be eaten in moderation because they are dense in calories. As a bonus, the leaves of the fig tree are edible. A liquid extract from the fig leaf has anti-diabetic properties. It helps reduce the amount of insulin needed by some people with diabetes. Consult your doctor before taking any supplements. |
