Greetings!

February celebrates health heart month.  When it comes to matters of the heart you will find many methods of keeping your ticker working its best.  Risk factors for heart disease included smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity, stress, age, and gender.    Some of those risk factors you can not do anything about, but many you CAN!  From exercise to relaxation techniques, there are so many good habits that will help keep your heart healthy.   Being the month of heart health,  try taking on a new healthy habit to knock off one of those risk factors.

EVOLUTION wants to give you all the support and advice you need - but not more than you want.  You can always update your subscription preferences with us by clicking the link at the bottom of our emails.

FIT - Tips
Just do it!running
Physical activity is the one habit that can help you take care the majority of your risk factors.  Adding physical activity into your week will help you; lower your blood pressure, lower your cholesterol level, help manage / prevent Type 2 diabetes, manage your weight, and help manage stress.   American College of Sports Medicine recommends the following program to get you on the path to better health:

Frequency of Training: 3-5 x / week

Intensity of Training: 60-90% of maximum heart rate or a moderate to moderately-hard level of effort.

Duration of activity: 20-60 minutes of continuous aerobic activity (walking, running, cycling, swimming, etc.)

Smokingno smoking

If you, or someone you know smokes, now is the time to make some changes.   Smoking contributes to many health problems such as cancer (of the lungs, larynx, esophagus, kidneys, stomach, etc.), Respiratory problems, and Heart Disease.  There are far more details to included in this newsletter so for more information click this link to the Center for Disease Control for more reasons to stop now!

For you Non-Smokers, being exposed to second hand smoke can be just as bad.  The Surgeon General states, "there is no risk-free exposure to second hand smoke."  You have the same risk of smoking induced health problems as smokers do.   For more information click on this link for the Surgeon General's report on The Health Consequences to Second Hand Smoke Exposure.   Then get that loved one to stop!

THE Burn
Add in Strength Training to Burn More!
 free weights
As mentioned above, physical activity helps to combat most of the risk factors associated with heart disease.  Of all of the risk factors weight management plays a roll in battling many of the other risk factors.  As you decrease your weight you are also likely to lower your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and keep your blood sugar under control.

Another add into your workouts that can help better manage your weight is strength training.  By including strength training into the mix you preserve valuable muscle, therefore help to boost your metabolism.  Muscle tissue is very active--it burns a lot of calories. Every pound of muscle burns about 35 calories per day.   This added muscle will help you keep your weight down and your risk factors under control.   Every little bit counts!

Breath
Just slowing down your breathing can lower your heart rate and blood pressure allowing your heart to take a break.  Try to take your breath into your abdomen (belly breathing), allowing your abdomen to expand as you inhale.  This type of breathing allows the muscles of your upper body to relax and taking your focus to your breath allows you to clear your mind of all of the "stuff" going on in your life.   A few times a day try to focus on "belly breathing" - you may find it to be a nice way to ease away tension brought on throughout your day.

High Blood Pressure Reduced by Massage Therapy
Get a regular massage to help relieve tension and lower blood pressure.   Read more about a study which conculded that regular massage helps to lower blood pressure levels.
