Blood Pressure Myth
High blood pressure is one of the most common cardiovascular diseases in America, yet it can be prevented and treated by making the right choices everyday.
The food we eat has a direct impact on our blood pressure, therefore watching your diet is one of the first steps in lowering and regulating blood pressure. Although reducing sodium is an excellent way to lower that pressure, it is not the only way. Limiting alcohol consumption can actually help improve overall heart health. Aside from cutting back on certain foods, it is encouraged to incorporate vegetables, fruits, and low-fat dairy into your meals.
Daily exercise, even just walking briskly for at least 30 minutes, may help you decrease you systolic pressure anywhere from 4-9 points. That's one episode of Wheel of Fortune; you can even watch it as you exercise! If you're looking for a more drastic reduction, you can drop your blood pressure significantly for every 20 pounds you lose.
The Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension, better known as the DASH diet offers helpful guidelines to follow when trying to lower your blood pressure. Follow this link to learn more about the DASH diet. DASHdiet.org
