FIT - Tips
Slow and Steady Wins the Raceturtle
You've heard that old tale that faster is not better.   Same goes for your fitness regimen.  Starting a new plan or getting back into an old one shouldn't feel like you've just jumped out of the starting blocks.  Ease into things.  If you haven't exercised in awhile start back with a few minutes each day and build from there.  If you took some time off from the weights or your regular classes start back with just a few exercises or a beginner class.  You will find the more gradually you ease back into things, the better your body and mind will feel.  Build from there...it's not a race...it's a journey.
FIT - Focus
Balanceyoga balance
No...not standing on one foot balance...we'll save that for another issue.  What I'm talking about is balance in your fitness regimen.  A well balanced fitness regimen includes:
  • Cardiovascular (walking, biking, swimming, or your mode of choice)
  • Flexibility (Stretching, Yoga, etc.)
  • Strength (weights, resistance bands, Pilates, etc.)
Your goal should be, to include a bit of each area into your fitness plan.   As a beginner, you should start off with Cardiovascular, from there add in some stretching or better yet a class / group that focuses on flexibility.  The more flexible you are the better you will feel during your cardiovascular exercise.   From there, once you have established a steady cardiovascular regimen add in some weights.

In the newsletters to come I will break down each area and go into more detail, as to specific guidelines and suggestions for each area.   In the meantime shoot for balance!   A little bit of this, a little bit of that.
THE Burn
Housework - burn some calories around the house!
 vaccuum
Cleaning up after the holiday chaos got you on the right track to burning those extra holiday calories.   Below is a list of some general household chores that get the body's engine going.    These estimates are based on a 150-pound, 35-year-old woman doing 30 solid minutes of everyday chores around the house.
  • Doing Laundry - 73 calories
  • Washing dishes - 78 calories
  • Vacuuming - 117 calories
  • Dusting - 85 calories
Now add in some disco music and start dancing while doing these chores....add on an additional 153 calories burned...no joke!

Relax
Did you know that relaxation is just as important as working out.  If your body does not have time to rest and rebuild itself you are prone to illness, injury, and just feeling lowsy.
Jack Canfield (author know best for his Chicken Soup for the Soul series) says that everyone should practice the "Hour of Power" daily.  The hour of power is 20 minutes of exercise, 20 minutes of reading, and 20 minutes of meditation/visualization.  If you do that each day you will be more fit, more informed / motivated, and your mind and body will be better rested.  Sounds pretty simple....why not give it a try.
As we glide into 2008 just remember to take it in stride.  Stress is a major problem for all of us & the last thing we need to stress out about is our health and wellness.

Have fun, enjoy the time you have to do something for yourself!  We are here to help & offer new and interesting ways to better your well being.

Yours in Health,
