Greetings!
As we plan this voyage of dance and discovery I have been able to relive my past journeys around Alaska. A most memorable trip was to Skagway, Alaska, our third Alaskan port city, as a group home counselor in 1984. My most vivid memories are of the eerie cemetery in deep forest and making french toast in pouring rain.Fortunately, for us we will be traveling in warm, cozy comfort on the Carnival Spirit. Skagway is most famous as the starting point for miners on the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898. As you explore Skagway you will begin to understand the significance of the words of Yukon Poet, Robert Service:"This is the Law of the Yukon, that only the Strong shall thrive; That surely the Weak shall perish, and only the Fit survive. Dissolute, damned and despairful, crippled and palsied and slain,
This is the Will of the Yukon,--Lo, how she makes it plain!"

Skagway - Gateway to the Klondike
|
The entire city of Skagway is part of the Klondike Goldrush National Historical Park and is dedicated to preserving Skagway's colorful history.
As you wander down Broadway Street on the Walking Tour the story of how miners either prospered or perished as they made their way up the Chilkoot Trail and on to the Yukon will unfold for you.
Much of what there is to do in Skagway is Free so go to Skagway for Free to find out more.
Skagway is located at the Northernmost point of Northamerica's deepest fjord. It is surrounded by sheer mountain peaks, glaciers and rivers and is famous for the nearby narrow gauge rail to White Pass Summit and the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve.
Therefore, there are many other things to do around Skagway. You can ride the White Pass Rail to the Summit and into the Yukon, horseback ride, take a dog sled tour or take it easy on a raft trip and possibly try your hand at gold panning. Go to How to Pass the Time of Day in Skagway for a full list.
Many years ago I went by car over the White Pass and into Skagway. I remember the treeless summit as a moonscape on an eerie foggy day. But, I was MOST fascinated by the town of Skagway itself and its stories.
Only two hours of dance workshops have been scheduled for the day in Skagway so that you can get the most out of seeing this marvelous historical treasure.
