Day 2 - Ketchikan - Our First Port of Call
Fishing  Ketchikan is five hundred miles north of Seattle, and is Alaska's "first city,"  Its historic downtown, wedged between water and forested mountains,  can be a delight, built into steep hills and partly propped on wooden pilings, with boardwalks, wooden staircases and totem poles dotted throughout. By 1886, white settlers had opened the first of dozens of canneries in what was soon to be the "salmon capital of the world."

Surrounded by forests of cedar, hemlock and spruce, Alaska's  fourth largest city is a strong contender for the nation's wettest; annual precipitation averages 165 inches.

They call it "liquid sunshine" in Ketchikan and a little drizzle is unlikely to stop anything one wants to do.

For starters I'm sure many of you are wondering what is FREE. The best free thing to do in any port of call is walk and explore so I've gathered some information about Ketchikan walks in our blog, Ketchikan Walks and Next to Nothing Attractions.

Ketchikan is most famous for its totem poles. One of the biggest attractions in Ketchikan is the Saxman Native Village tour - The tour lasts 2 hours and costs $44.

Even if you are participating i
n our morning dance workshops there is still time to take the tour to the Saxman Native Village before the ship embarks at 5 pm.Alaska map

For those not taking our dance workshops there are an array of activities including sea kayaking, charter salmon fishing and seaplane adventure tours.

You can easily book these SHORE EXCURSIONS with CanDoTours.
         1. click on the Extras tab 2. click on the Shore       Excursions button on the right 3. click on Alaska and scroll down to Ketchikan.

Our Ketchikan Shore Excursion blog or Havana in Alaska group page on Facebook contain more information about excursion booking and prices.

Extended Stay - Denali National Park
DenaliSome of you have already asked about setting up an excursion to Denali National Park after the cruise. Make yourselves at home in Denali at the Denali Grizzly Bear Resort.
They feature both rustic cabins and comfortable hotel lodging. Another favorite place for camping, rustic cabin stays, whitewater rafting and bike rental is the
Denali Outdoor Center. Please let them know you are with the
Havana in Alaska group.
For assistance in planning an extended stay in Alaska just call or email Mary Christensen.
Since our theme today is Alaska we leave you with Mary's lifelong favorite quote from the Robert Service poem,
The Spell of the Yukon:

It's the great, big, broad land 'way up yonder,
         It's the forests where silence has lease;
It's the beauty that thrills me with wonder,
It's the stillness that fills me with peace.

We look forward to dancing and exploring with you!
