New book examines the worldwide bicycling renaissance

Cities throughout California and across the nation are being transformed by a renewed interest in the health benefits, cost savings, convenience and fun of bicycling.

This month we learned about City Cycling, a new guide by Rutgers University urban planning professor John Pucher to today's urban bicycling renaissance, with information on cycling's health benefits, safety, bikes and bike equipment, bike lanes, bike sharing, and other topics. Pucher and co-editor Ralph Buehler examine bicycling conditions in Davis, Calif., among other cities throughout the world.

Published by MIT Press, City Cycling goes on sale in November.

AROUND THE STATE

SACRAMENTO: The Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates is leading the effort to find a fix for a notoriously dysfunctional complex of intersections where two bicyclists died in vehicle collisions within 18 months.

The so-called Carlson Corridor is a heavily traveled commute route into the central city that also connects the main entrance to the Sacramento State University campus, a quiet residential neighborhood, and a popular riverfront recreational trail. SABA proposes alternate "paint-only" and full redesign solutions to remove hazards and clarify travel routes for bicyclists, pedestrians and drivers.

SAN FRANCISCO: The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition has stepped directly into the public debate about bicyclists who don't obey traffic laws. In a recent newsletter the coalition addressed the perception and reality of so-called "scofflaw bicyclists."

"To help move the conversation about behavior on our streets in a more positive and purposeful direction, the coalition is working to share an honest assessment of what's happening our streets, how things can be improved, and how we all have responsibility when moving around the city, no matter what mode of transportation we choose," SFBC Executive Director Leah Shahum said recently, "And, of course, how City priorities and decisions affect both behavior and safety." The lengthy newsletter article addresses the role played by safety, education, enforcement, relations with drivers, and bike facilities.

SUNNYVALE: Bicyclists in Sunnyvale now have the right to seek civil damages against drivers who threaten or harass them on the road. Sunnyvale joins Los Angeles and Berkeley in adopting an ordinance to give bicyclists more recourse to addressing limited or inadequate traffic enforcement.

Ed McLaughlin, tireless champion of bicycling

Bike advocacy in California lost a champion when Ed McLaughlin of Chico died on May 24 following a brief illness.

McLaughlin was a former executive director of Chico Velo Cycling Club, where he helped bring national attention to bicycling in Chico, and also served on the CBC board of directors. He parlayed the success of Chico Velo's Wildflower rides into unprecedented support for CBC, pioneering the "buck-a-rider" model of support for CBC that is now emulated by numerous other clubs.

During a group ride through Chico's Bidwell Park in 2007, McLaughlin was forced into a traffic bollard and fell, leaving him quadriplegic. He later returned to Chico Velo to serve for a short time as director. Chico Velo's annual Tour de Ed honors his work by raising funds to assist injured bicyclists.

"Ed was an intrepid, ornery true believer who wore his heart on his sleeve and backed up his convictions and attitude with commitment to service on behalf of bicycling," said CBC president Chris Morfas. "His longstanding service to the CBC board of directors was testament to his steadfastness."
