Triangle Speech Services is a small company of licensed speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who specialize in foreign accent and regional dialect modification and related communication skills. July has come and gone without a newsletter! The office was closed from June 11 to July 19. I enjoyed my first ever trip out of the United States! I traveled to London in June on a ten-day tour titled "From Roman's to Royalty" with Elderhostel, now called "Road Scholar" and it was "beyond wonderful!" I'm planning to go on another trip next May to Florence and Tuscany, Italy and will be using the Rosetta Stone (c) software program to start to learn some basic Italian between now and then. The first two weeks of July were spent at my timeshares in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts and in southern Vermont. During that time I enjoyed an outstanding performance of traditional Indian classical dance called Kuchipudi by Shantala Shivalingappa accompanied by four classically trained musicians. Her artistry mesmerized a sophisticated "New York" audience at the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. Triangle Speech Services has been busier than ever since my return with several new inquiries, free thirty-minute phone consults and information session appointments even though I returned with evaluations for four new clients already scheduled through the middle of August. So how can I inspire and inform our readers this month? When I look at my own life and, especially at the success of this business which I started five years ago at the age of "retirement," I want to encourage you to dare to dream. Do not be afraid to "dream big" and then to focus on the first or the next small step to take to make your dream a reality. You don't have to know in detail what each step will entail; just know what you must do next and who can help you. |
Create Your Vision
In the Spring of 2009, I visualized a rewarding, successful and profitable accent modification business that would allow me to travel abroad. The first step was to get a passport which I did last August. Next I registered for this London trip. Here I am at the Tower of London complex posing with a "mascot" dressed like the palace guards. Think about your vision for yourself in your career. "Dare to dream" and then write down some positive statements about the outcome. Here are examples of outcome statements:
- I have won the promotions I deserve and I am advancing on my career path.
- I speak English carefully but confidently!
- I am as comfortable with face-to-face meetings as I am sending emails.
- I know how to make my phone conversations clear and successful.
- I am relaxed and comfortable talking
with my American friends and colleagues in business and social
situations.
- I feel proud of my speaking skills.
- I now have hope and confidence
because I have worked step by step with a professional, learned the
sounds and rhythms of American English, practiced very patiently and
made my speech "listener friendly.
It is never too late for you to dream. One is never "too old" to dream or to be blessed by having one's dreams come true!
