NurseNursing Progam Boasts Largest Class
Donnelly College's January 2011 Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) class will be the largest in the program's history with 21 students enrolled. Nearly 40 applicants completed the program's competitive selection process, each vying for one of the 25 seats available.

"The faculty and staff within the program are thrilled with this new class," said Kerry Manning, RN, Donnelly's Health Care Retention Coordinator and instructor within the program. "With a large percentage of Donnelly's student population being students of color, the College is truly fulfilling a community need for more nurses of color in the field.  With each new term comes more competition among applicants for a spot in this growing program, making this an exciting time to be here."

The College received approval for a maximum of 50 LPN students per year, with one cohort starting each January and one starting each June. The program was approved by the State Board of Nursing in March 2008, making this Donnelly's sixth class of LPNs.

On January 12, 2011, DC's LPN program is hosting a free event open to all students, faculty, and staff, as well as community members. Representatives from Early Detection Works will be speaking to attendees about ways to detect breast and ovarian cancer, as well as providing information about free screening and treatment opportunities to those without health insurance. Lunch will be provided, donated by Donnelly's Health Student Organization.

To attend this event, RSVP to Kerry Manning at (913) 621-8709 or
kmanning@donnelly.edu. To learn more about Donnelly's LPN program, contact Theresa Kolbeck, Allied Health Recruiter and Advisor, at (913) 621-8705 or tkolbeck@donnelly.edu, or visit donnelly.edu/lpn

Energy Smart Homes
You are invited to attend an informational meeting for the Energy Smart Homes Program.

Thursday, Dec. 16th

6:45pm to 8:00pm

Community Room at CHWC Firehouse
2 South 14th Street

Learn more about this exciting program.  This program is part of a collaborative effort between local government and utilities to promote energy conservation through energy efficiency improvements in existing homes.

"Energy audits reveal the needs of a particular residence and the revolving loan fund will provide the necessary monies to make the homes energy efficient," Mayor Joe Reardon said. "The Unified Government is pleased to partner with the BPU and the Kansas corporation Commission in making our community energy efficient and sustainable."

BPU partnered with the Kansas Corporation Commission to provide no interest loans through the Efficiency Kansas Revolving Loan program to BPU customers. The program allows a homeowner to borrow up to $20,000 for audit approved energy improvements and up to $30,000 for small commercial businesses. Loan approval is needed to participate in the Energy Smart Home program.

Any Wyandotte County homeowner, landlord with an existing home or small business can apply for the low-cost effective energy loan program. However, applicants are required to schedule an energy audit by certified auditors that have met the criteria established by the Kansas State Energy Office. The audit consists of a thorough inspection and evaluation of the residence energy use and energy loss; inside and out. The auditor then follows up with an Energy Conservation Plan that recommends cost effective energy upgrades.

The UG is providing a financial incentive program to help minimize out of pocket costs for applicants and to assist with the energy audit costs. This program allows homeowners to get an energy audit worth up to $600, for just $100.

Counterfeit Money
Counterfeit Bills Being Circulated at Local Business Establishments

The KCK Police Department is encouraging local merchants to take extra precautions in identifying counterfeit bills. Recent investigations show an increase of counterfeit "washed" 100 dollar bills. These counterfeit bills are being used at local shops in the KCK and metropolitan area.

Please see the attached document to view a counterfeit $100 bill. The bill is actually a five dollar bill that has been washed of it's original print and reprinted with $100 bill information. If the bill is checked with a counterfeit detector pen it will show to be on legitimate US currency paper. However, if the bill is held up towards a light or a light is held closely beneath the bill it will show an image of Abraham Lincoln to the right of Franklin. It also has a plastic strip to the left of Franklin that will denote the correct denomination of the bill, also seen by holding up to a light or placing a light closely beneath the bill.

Business owners are urged to inform employees of these simple methods of identifying a counterfeit bill and to take the second effort beyond the use of the counterfeit detector pen.  Although the denomination of $100 appears to be the most popular choice, please be aware that this crime is not limited to only the $100 bill and that all bills should be checked.

The KCK Police Department thanks you for your cooperation in this matter.

Burglar21 Things a Burglar Won't Tell You

1. Of course I look familiar. I was here just last week cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters, or delivering your new refrigerator.

2. Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier.

3. Love those flowers. That tells me you have taste... and taste means there are nice things inside. Those yard toys your kids leave out always make me wonder what type of gaming system they have.

4. Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up on the driveway. And I might leave a pizza flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it.

5. If it snows while you're out of town, get a neighbor to create car and foot tracks into the house.  Virgin drifts in the driveway are a dead giveaway.

6. If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don't let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it's set. That makes it too easy.

7. A good security company alarms the window over the sink and the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom - and your jewelry. It's not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too.

8. It's raining, you're fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock your door - understandable. But understand this: I don't take a day off because of bad weather.

9. I always knock first. If you answer, I'll ask for directions or offer to clean your gutters. (Don't take me up on it.)

10. Do you really think I won't look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet.

11. Here's a helpful hint: I almost never go into kids' rooms.

12. You're right: I won't have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it's not bolted down, I'll take it with me.

13. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. If you're reluctant to leave your TV on while you're out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television. (Find it at http://www.faketv.com)

14. Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake. I do my best to never, ever look like a crook.

15. The two things I hate most: loud dogs and nosy neighbors.

16. I'll break a window to get in even if it makes a little noise. If your neighbor hears one loud sound, he'll stop what he's doing and wait to hear it again. If he doesn't hear it again, he'll just go back to what he was doing. It's human nature.

17. I'm not complaining, but why would you pay all that money for a fancy alarm system and leave your house without setting it?

18. I love looking in your windows. I'm looking for signs that you're home, and for flat screen TVs or gaming systems I'd like. I'll drive or walk through your neighborhood at night, before you close the blinds, just to pick my targets.

19. Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page. It's easier than you think to look up your address.

20. To you, leaving that window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air. To me, it's an invitation.

21. If you don't answer when I knock, I try the door. Occasionally, I hit the jackpot and walk right in.

Boy with hat
Hats & Gloves Needed
It's that time of year again when things are really starting to cool down. During these cold winter months a lot of AYS' youth and families go without the necessary cold weather clothing because they simply don't have the money to afford it. So, during the holiday season AYS collects hats and gloves for our youth in order to help make sure that they are staying warm and healthy.

If you would like to donate hats or gloves, or organize a hat and glove drive at your workplace, please call Matt Insco at (913) 831-2820 x.202 or email him at
minsco@aysusa.org for more information.

Security Tips for Homes

Our homes are the center of our lives, where we should feel most safe.  The guiding principle to being safe is to "know thy neighbor".  Street and homes should be designed to encourage interaction between neighbors.

- Walkways and landscaping direct visitors to the proper entrance and away from private areas

 - The front door should be clearly visible from the driveway

 - All doorways that open to the outside should be well lit

 - Sidewalks and all area of the yard should be well lit

Don't ever hesitate to report any suspicious activity in your neighborhood to the Police Department.
