 Nonprofit Law Seminar
Employment Law Every Manager Should Know
Truth be told, there are challenging employees in every segment of the workforce. Nonprofit agencies are no exception. In fact, nonprofits offer a very unique set of circumstances beginning with a tendency to "social work employees as opposed to simply managing them." This session will explore "best practices" for properly handling supervisory issues faced by management including documentation of misconduct, work place bullying, duty to supervise and the handling of confidential information.Thursday, Nov. 4 8am - 4pm YWCA 1017 N. 6th Street Register at info@mvplaw.com or 913-371-3838
Cost to Attend? It's FREE!! McAnany, Van Cleave & Phillips are not charging to attend this Nonprofit Law Seminar.

Benjamin Franklin is quoted as saying, "There are two things certain in life: death and taxes." It is true then and it is true now. This session offers nonprofit entities a discussion of proven strategies for navigating the taxation ins-and-outs of a 501(c)(3) organization. Attendees will also be given a general overview of the recently published Internal Revenue Service Compliance Guide for 501(c)(3) Public Charities.
Job Searches and Interviews
Most successful job interviews begin with preparation on the part of both the interviewee and the interviewer. Attendees will be given an update on the potential pitfalls and common mistakes which occur during the hiring process.
Premises Liability
"Shovel your walk, it's cheaper." This session will provide a comprehensive look at the general principles of premises liability combined with state-specific liability issues for the owners and occupiers of property.
Workers' Compensation Law
The safety and security of workers is paramount in any industry. Nevertheless, work place injuries do occur. This session will provide an in-depth discussion of significant developments in workers' compensation law including major appellate decisions and legislative changes affecting the landscape of work place injuries.
Director & Officer Liability
"Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown." King Henry IV, Part II, Act 3. - William Shakespeare. A discussion of issues pertinent to top managers including scope of authority, corporate duties, personal liability, and the potential implications of Sarbanes-Oxley.

The Patient Retention and Affordable Care Act and the Healthcare and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 are loosely referred to as "the Healthcare Reform Law." These laws have dramatically changed the landscape for both employers and healthcare providers. Robert E. Miller Group and an MVP attorney will provide a general overview of the new laws and will provide attendees with an opportunity to direct their questions to experts in the field.
Technological Challenges and Other Frontiers
The internet, text messaging, voicemail, and email - the challenge lying in wait and what your future holds. This session will provide an updated list of the "Do's and Don'ts" and will identify trends for the 21st Century work place.

A Christmas Carol: An Urban Cautionary Tale
IMAGO DEI Arts is thrilled to debut A Christmas Carol: An Urban Cautionary Tale, based on the classic by Charles Dickens. Work on the updated Christmas Carol began over a year ago when the KC Rep announced the decision not to produce their version of the Christmas Carol. This new version written by Lori Lee Triplett is more reflective on the current inner city landscape and poor in America. Women and minorities will inhabit a number of the roles because they make up a larger part of the economically deprived.
In this updated version which takes place in the inner city, Ms. Abbenezer Scrooge (yes, Abby!) brings miserly conduct to a new high by "borrowing" the neighbor's paper through her dumpster diving assistant, Barb Crachit, refusing to use computers, and pinching every penny until it screams. Abby's development corporation is raking in the money, while a long list of code violations is ignored. But don't worry, her departed business partner, Marley, returns from the grave to help set her straight with the able assistance of the three spirits of Christmas. Along the way we get to admire the Crachit sisters care of the foster children including Tiny Tim, who asks God to bless us all.
Performances are Nov 11 - 13 at 7 pm, with a matinee at 2pm on Saturday at the national historic landmark Granada Theatre, 1015 Minnesota Ave, Kansas City, KS 66101. Tickets at $12.50 at the door, with a special presale rate of $5. Presale tickets are available at the Granada Theatre, Tues. - Sat. 1-5:30 pm, and must be purchased by Nov 10, 2010.

 Security Tips for Offices
There's a fine line between a safe office building and a fortress. As structures grow in size and pedestrian and vehicle traffic increases, safety becomes an extremely important issue.
- Public entrances should be clearly defined by walkways and signage
- Building entrances should be accentuated through architectural elements, lighting, landscaping and/or paving stones
- Restrooms should be observable from nearby offices
- Hallways should be well lit
- Windows and exterior doors should be visible from the street or by neighbors
- Elevators and stairwells should be clearly visible from windows and doors
