Most plans for a safe Halloween should start well before Halloween and include getting a safe costume that is:
- Flame Resistant. Since candlelit pumpkins are popular on Halloween, a flame resistant Halloween costume is very important. Although it is easy to buy a Halloween costume that is flame resistant by simply checking the label, if you are making a homemade costume, be sure to use flame resistant materials.
- Easily Visible at night, which might include some kind of reflective tape or other bright and reflective materials incorporated into the costume.
- Well Fitted to your child and not too long so that it can make your child trip and fall, a leading cause of injuries on Halloween. Masks, hats, and other accessories, such as a sword, should also be appropriate to your child's size.
In addition, to help make sure your child can see and can be seen, you might incorporate a flashlight into your child's costume.

 Nonprofit Law Seminar
Employment Law Every Manager Should Know
Truth be told, there are challenging employees in every segment of the workforce. Nonprofit agencies are no exception. In fact, nonprofits offer a very unique set of circumstances beginning with a tendency to "social work employees as opposed to simply managing them." This session will explore "best practices" for properly handling supervisory issues faced by management including documentation of misconduct, work place bullying, duty to supervise and the handling of confidential information.Thursday, Nov. 4 8am - 4pm YWCA 1017 N. 6th Street Register at info@mvplaw.com or 913-371-3838
Cost to Attend? It's FREE!! McAnany, Van Cleave & Phillips are not charging to attend this Nonprofit Law Seminar.

Benjamin Franklin is quoted as saying, "There are two things certain in life: death and taxes." It is true then and it is true now. This session offers nonprofit entities a discussion of proven strategies for navigating the taxation ins-and-outs of a 501(c)(3) organization. Attendees will also be given a general overview of the recently published Internal Revenue Service Compliance Guide for 501(c)(3) Public Charities.
Job Searches and Interviews
Most successful job interviews begin with preparation on the part of both the interviewee and the interviewer. Attendees will be given an update on the potential pitfalls and common mistakes which occur during the hiring process.
Premises Liability
"Shovel your walk, it's cheaper." This session will provide a comprehensive look at the general principles of premises liability combined with state-specific liability issues for the owners and occupiers of property.

Donnelly College Receives Funds for Service Learning Program
State Farm awarded $10,000 to Donnelly College to help advance the College's service learning program that was launched in Fall 2009 and is currently in the pilot phase. The purpose of the program is to provide students with an opportunity to apply and reflect on course content and personal growth while simultaneously meeting a real community need to combat high school drop-out rates.
Throughout its pilot year, 30 Donnelly students were given the option of mentoring students at two local urban high schools through the Wednesday afternoon Adopt-a-School program, or serving as electronic mentors through the MentorMail program at a third local urban high school.
Through these outlets, Donnelly students served as positive role models by encouraging the high school students to consider college. These experiences are then tied back to students' courses at Donnelly in areas such as leadership and writing.
"By tying these service experiences into the curriculum, we build stronger connections between classroom learning and real-world issues," said Donnelly President Dr. Steve LaNasa. "As a Catholic, liberal arts college, Donnelly is always looking for new ways to incorporate Catholic values into the student experience. Service learning is just another way Donnelly provides students with an opportunity to live these values, transform themselves into service-minded individuals and contribute to the ultimate sustainability of the community. This program, specifically, strengthens community sustainability by focusing on educational achievement of high school youth."
The State Farm funds will be used to support curriculum development and campus-wide service events, as well as provide salary support for a Service-Learning Coordinator position and finance equipment needed for the program. "State Farm believes strong communities are built from our youth up. We actively support programs that are committed to improving education and the future of our youth," said Tamara O'Connor, State Farm Director of Public Affairs. "The experiences students gain from Donnelly's service-learning program will help prepare them to be active and contributing participants in their communities."
