How to Stop Copper Theft!
Copper thieves can turn your building into a nightmare. Replacing the pipes can be costly and time consuming. Other than standing guard 24/7, there is no fail-safe way to eliminate this threat. There are, however, steps that you can take which can make your property a less attractive target:
- Visit Your Operations at Night - Nothing beats a nighttime visit of your property to identify areas of vulnerability. Are there sections of your fence that fall into deep shadow? Are there natural "safe zones" that are easily visible from the street and lit by preexisting light sources? Your nighttime visit will help assess your business the way a copper thief would.
- Use Video Surveillance - Nothing stops a thief like flashing lights and an alarm. Adding live video surveillance to your property can stop copper theft entirely - especially if your security providers can call the police for you! Motion detection alarms also scare off theives before they start.
- Build Effective Fences - Are your fences high enough? Is there adequate signage that warns potential thieves that you prosecute to the fullest extent of the law? A chain link enclosure around your HVAC system is a start, but for systems that are easily reached, consider investing in wrought iron. These are almost impossible to break through. Electric fences are also a good deterrent but they must be marked as electric fences and can't be placed where children might come in contact with them.
- Quality Locks - To get to your copper, a thief has to gain access to the property. That's where the locks come in. If all entryways into the property are secured with single and deadbolts, their job will be a lot harder.
- Good Exterior Lighting - Although not that helpful against daytime thieves, good exterior lighting can make your property a lesser target. Motion detector lights are often the best choice. Direct light onto the specific areas you're trying to protect rather than into the eyes of potential observers. Many property owners prefer to hide their HVAC units with bushes, trees, other plantings and even weeds. Problem is, by hiding your HVAC equipment you give cover to the thieves. Make sure an observer/police can see your system.
- Paint Exposed Copper Pipes - One method which can be extremely effective, is to paint the exposed copper piping throughout your property. A good coat of spray paint can be the most cost effective method to copper theft deterrence. Salvage yards will not accept copper if it is painted. They only way thieves get money for your painted copper is to undergo the time-prohibitive process of stripping off the paint.
- Secure Basement Windows - One of the most often overlooked trouble spots are basement windows. Basement windows in most older houses usually have thin glass and are made of wood. If this is the case at your property, consider replacing or sealing off trouble windows.
- Go Plastic - It may not be cost effective to replace your copper plumbing with plastic, but if you're getting hit repeatedly it's time to ruin the spoils so the thieves go elsewhere.
- Establish an End-of-Day Security Routine - Make it a daily routine to walk around your business at the end of the day to make sure that everything is secure. Check that everything is locked, no boxes or high weeds growing near fences, and that all security systems are armed.

Donnelly College Receives Funds for HELP-KC Project
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Hispanic Serving Institutions Assisting Communities (HUD-HSIAC) program has awarded Donnelly College nearly $600,000 to fund its Housing and Entrepreneurial Support for Low-Income Persons in Kansas City (HELP-KC) project. The College was one of only 11 federally designated Hispanic Serving Institutions selected of more than 40 applicants.
The HELP-KC project is designed to directly support community residents in the urban core through two distinct programming options, one that will promote knowledge of and access to home ownership through educational programming, and another that supports small business development in urban core communities by offering programs to provide technical support to participants as they develop business concepts.
HUD funds will also be used to renovate a stand-alone space on Donnelly's campus to be available to community organizations and agencies.
"HELP-KC addresses the great needs of our surrounding community," said Donnelly President Dr. Steve LaNasa. "It is designed to promote employment, job creation, access to improved housing, community interaction and, as a whole, improve the sustainability and quality of our community.
"We recognize that job growth and opportunity through technical assistance, and housing education are two of the most needed areas of outreach in our community's efforts to be more stable and thus economically viable."
Donnelly is partnering on this grant with two local non-profit organizations that serve the same community as the College: Community Housing of Wyandotte County (CHWC) and the Hispanic Economic Development Corporation (HEDC).
CHWC will promote knowledge of and access to home ownership by offering educational programming and individual counseling at Donnelly through a "Pathways to Successful Home Ownership" program. The goal of this program is to increase awareness of purchase programs, raise financial literacy to avoid foreclosure, and promote home purchase in the KCK community. Outreach for the program will target KCK residents, where nearly one out of four neighborhood Hispanic families live below poverty level.
HEDC will serve as a HELP-KC partner by offering a FastTrac program to the community on the Donnelly College campus. FastTrac is a business training course that targets aspiring and existing entrepreneurs who have limited business experience. HEDC will also provide one-on-one technical assistance and small group workshops to small business owners. These programs are delivered by certified instructors and coaches who are bilingual and bicultural - a significant benefit considering the sizable Hispanic population in the KCK community. Participants in HEDC's programs will also be eligible to apply for micro-grants to support business establishment, expansion, or stabilization.
"Together, these three organizations are well positioned to improve our community's substantial issues centering on business ownership, entrepreneurship development, and education on affordable housing options and opportunities," said Brent Miles, President of the Wyandotte County Economic Development Council and member of the HELP-KC Advisory Board. "Donnelly has always served as a committed community partner, and is particularly known for its commitment to serving low-income persons. This project will continue to further our community just as other Donnelly initiatives have done."
Questions about HELP-KC should be directed to Frances Sanders at (913) 621-8716 or fsanders@donnelly.edu.
