Revitalizing the Old Lowell Elementary School
Senator Chris Steineger and his wife, Shari Wilson are in the process of revitalizing the old Lowell Elementary School located at 11th Street and Orville Avenue. The empty building will soon become Historic Lowell Lofts, 26 apartments on four floors for senior citizens. The building is receiving all-new plumbing, wiring, insulation, heat and air conditioning, an elevator and appliances. A new roof and skylights have already been installed. Repointing and sealing of the outer stone walls and foundation are underway. New windows are on order and should be installed soon.
Lowell Elementary School was built in 1898 with an addition in 1902, and was operated as an elementary school until approximately 1980, when it was used for other purposes by USD 500 until being closed several years later. Chris Steineger and Shari Wilson purchased the building in late 2006 with the intent of converting it to apartments. "We are really excited to be under construction and moving forward with the apartments," said the owners. "It's taken awhile to get everything in order, but hopefully by summer this building will once again be the showplace it used to be, with new residents to fill its spaces."
The owners are collecting stories and pictures from those who attended or taught at Lowell Elementary School at any time during its history. Please contact sharilea51@gmail.com or call 913-287-7636. |
