Can you "Party" Too Much?
Downtown Shareholders has been working with the KCK Police Department on several problems with "Party Houses" in the Downtown District that have gotten out of control at times. Issues have included destruction of property and violence around these locations. As a representative of the merchants in the district, Downtown Shareholders and the Police have visited with the owners of these properties to resolve these problems. The owners are now taking steps to help curb these types of activities.
If you are experiencing problems around your businesses, please call Ed Linnebur at the Downtown Shareholders, 913/371-0705. We also encourage you to attend our Merchants Committee which discusses a variety of topics including safety, cleanliness, and marketing strategies for merchants. Our next meeting is Friday, January 22nd, 9:00am at the YWCA.

A little known feature of this wonderful building is the large Ballroom upstairs that can hold up to 400 people with catering available. This is a fantastic place for weddings and receptions, corporate events and parties, etc. A varietly of other sized rooms are also available in the building that can be used for meetings and/or training spaces.

3rd Annual "Breaking the Silence" Environmental Conference
Friday and Saturday, January 8th & 9th
Reardon Convention Center
5 - 10pm on Friday / 9am - 9pm on Saturday
Admission is just $1 a day.
This year's conference is in response to a recent survey by the Kansas Health Institute. "When we became aware of a report that ranked the health of Kansas residents in all 105 counties, we were very disturbed to find that Wyandotte Country received the worst ranking (105th) for health care," said event director, Richard Mabion.
The conference will open with two performers on Friday night - story teller Molly Postlewait and poet laureate Lloyd Daniel. Roderick Bremby, the Secretary of Health and Environment for the state of Kansas, and Sarah O'Neal Rush, the great grand-daughter of Booker T. Washington, will deliver the keynote addresses on Saturday morning. The conference will also feature more than a dozen breakout sessions and free health screenings for anyone who attends. These sessions will cover a wide variety of areas ranging from energy efficiency, health research, sustainable food production and environment law to prisoner's re-entry, No Child Left Inside, Job Core for Single Parents and Food, Not Lawns. The conference will conclude with the showing of an award-winning documentary, "Taking Root," which tells the dramatic story of Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai, whose simple act of planning trees grew into a nationwide movement to safeguard the environment, protect human rights and defend democracy. Further conference details can be found on-line at www.breakingthesilence.us. |

Tackle Graffiti before It Tackles You!
The most effective way to discourage graffiti is to take care of the issue as soon as it appears. Research indicates that graffiti should be cleaned up within 24-48 hours. If you don't remove graffiti it will attract an increased amount of graffiti at your place and in the neighborhood. Once you have been hit with graffiti and cleaned it up, don't be surprised if you get hit several more times. Remember, quick cleanup is important. You will win in the end!
In order to speed up the process, property owners (both commercial and residential) can complete an "Authorization for Abatement" form in advance, so if you get "tagged", Operation Brightside (a program offered by the Unified Government) can come out and assist in cleaning your property as soon as it is discovered. This is very helpful if you, the property owner, are not at your building on a daily basis. A neighbor or passerby can report the graffiti to Operation Brightside and it can be abated in a timely basis.
To receive an Authorization Form, contact Operation Brightside at 913-573-8735. |
